You are welcome, the OM616 turbo was actually only meant for export in the Gurkha vehicles. It was never intended for domestic market. The initial lots came with all mechanical pumps with no ALDA, the later ones got intercooler, ALDA and pumps with electronics to meet Euro-III.

The DI sold today uses linkless throttle system.

Are many of the IDI Force parts interchangeable with the old 616 notor? It sounds as if either the DI or IDI motors would be much more efficient, cleaner, and reliable than our tiring motors.

If the Changfa diesels can be imported I can't see a reason (although I am sure there are many) why the OM616's can't be imported....perhaps even if they were imported as generator engines.

I would like to bring to your kind notice that the OM 616 (Turbo and
Naturally Aspirated) Engines conform to Euro I emission norms only, hence
they have been phased out from regular production. We only supply these
engines incase of bulk orders for stationery applications.
Group buy of "generators", anyone? :p

The IDI uses standard OM617 turbo parts including the crank minus one cylinder. The DI is different story, its 2.6L and has different pistons as well as crank and flywheel.

The DI is noisy and develops 11bhp less but is quite durable and develops torque at lower RPM than IDI.

That would be a splendid idea, can you get a quote from them?

How much hp/torque out of the 2.4? IDI?

So the DI has less HP but more torque despite more displacement?

I wonder what the minimum order would be? Importation and tarriffs wouldn't be too difficult. Did they mention how much in any way $1000? $3000?

I sent him an e-mail saying that I could feasibly make a "bulk order" for a "stationary application" and asking for an opinion about that.

I'm being diplomatic and very polite about the whole thing, since they're the only people who sell these, and I don't want to come across as a rude American or something of the sort.

I'm just guessing but I'd say probably $3k + freight. Still cheaper than a Metric Motors engine, especially given the fact that if these things are being sold as a set, they're going to have new turbochargers, injection pumps, etc. (I don't think they'd just ship an engine block for use as a generator, without even the support parts needed to make it operate.)

Hell, being non-U.S.-spec, they might even have the "good" M(?) pumps instead of the MW pumps.

The DI starts its torque at a lower 1800rpm and gives around 160lb-ft compared to IDI's 145 at 2200rpm.

Well you have been more polite than the average Indian Joe in every case, no need to be extra cautious. They are a business firm and its in their interest to cater to your queries, in case you don't get sufficient response, send me a PM and I will talk to the big brass there.

I asked about the prices and the minimum quantity:

Thanks for your mail. Since these engines are not in regular production, I
will check on the availability status of the OM 616 Turbo engines and
revert back. Please bear with us.
That sounds positive. More to come as I hear it. I hope at least one other of you wants to buy a Turbo 616, too :p

If you can afford the slick 5 speed with it, it will transform your good old W123 240D into a peppy little thing.

It would be alot cheaper to get a N/A 617, it would have the same power as a 616a but without the lag.

The 616 turbo would have an edge over 617 n/a. The turbo has 91bhp over standard 617's 80bhp, not to mention less weight of one piston. The KKK turbo used in the OM616 turbo is a small one which spools up quite quickly.

Can you elaborate on this. Did Tempo sell their vans in Europe or are you saying MB used the engines in their vans? I thought MB didn't turbo their vans until they made the Sprinter. I'm interested because one of these days I want to purchase a motorhome in Europe again and if they have Class A's with turbo 616's, it's definitely something I'd look for.
