OM617 engine differences

Hello-

If there's a reference for this somewhere, hopefully someone can direct me to it.

Other than horsepower/torque figures, I'm wondering what the difference in the OM617.950, -951, and 952. They all have the same bore, stroke, and displacement, but the HP ratings are 115, 123, and 125.

Were the newer turbos bigger? Different injectors? Something in the injection pump? Can my 116 chassis 300SD by turned up to 123 or 125?

Engines after 1980 have a different cam profile for higher airflow that adds the extra 10hp. The difference between 951 and 952 is in the engine mounts and oil pressure sender, they are otherwise identical.

To get it up to 951/2 specs you would have to change your camshaft, tappets and retune your injection pump. Not worth the effort for 10hp.

The oil filter housings are actually different. The electric sender does not fit the 952. There may be more differences to require the need for different 951 or 952 casting numbers on both the block and head.
I have both type engines in my garage to make comparisons.

Oil sender in 950 was mechanical, in 951 it was electrical. Also, I think motor mounts were different.

There are also other versions with different horsepower ratings, different IP's and different oil filter housings that point back and down that MB put in their vans.

Is it bad that the only thing to me that's different is "turbo/non-turbo?"

A lot of different MB vans. Basically any van with the number XX9d. They put the 616 in the vans numbered XX7d. I don't have a picture of the oil filters but I have owned a couple. Messy to change since as soon as you loosen the nuts, oil starts running out.
They put them in vans rated for at least 4 tons.

More uninformed questions, what do the XX in xx9d stand for, numbers or letters?? Did they import many into the USA? A rating of 4 tons sounds pretty hefty, I think I want one!

I have a '79 and a '80 617 engine. The '79 always has more power than the '80. Yet they both get the same mileage: 28 MPG

The early cams were "soft cast" and were matched to soft rockers. If your rockers do not have the hard steel pads on them where they ride on the cam you have the old design cam. To upgrade that you will need to buy the revised cam, a complete set of hardened rockers, and the upgraded cam towers (casting was changed to be stronger for the increased lift and bearing holes are larger to fit the redesigned cam). All are drop in fit to the older engines.

Mustang,

I think those hard steel pads on the cam followers are made out of carbide. And the cam is made from chilled iron, very hard but brittle. Don't drop the cam.
