I have an 85 with a manual transmission. The manual is a first gen and has a slotted hole for the speed cable. The 85 has a square end. Anyone know if/where I can find a slotted cable that will work with the 2.88 speedo? Otherwise I am going to put some JB weld in there and make it square but then I wont be able to remove the cable again. At this point I have no speedo. It had worked for a while but finally spun free.

if you go the JB route, put a tiny layer of grease on the end of the cable before you let the JB harden. that should let it release in the future, but still harden up nice. or maybe put a piece of seran wrap over the cable first... no idea, just some ideas.

I am also worried about the JB hardening and not allowing it to turn. I might just use some seran wrap until I can find a better solution. I am not so worried about speed per se as 99.9% of my driving is in town, but I am about to roll over 330k and look fwd to 333333. Plus fuel economy has been an issue for me (not nearly as bad as before when I was doing about 12mi/gal).

Cant you just use a pair of pliers to crush the cable end into a slot shape?

Funny, I just went through this, albeit reversed.

Id bet on the JB weld route. A toothpick or something small like that to get the goop where you need and insert the speedo cable. It should make a nice mold for itself. a bit of lube as mentioned would be good as well to ensure the speedo cable can be removed.

The only other thing I can think of would be 2 small square strips to occupy the space on either side of the speedo cable male end. I think this would be kind of a pain to do though so back to the JB weld.
