amsoil motor oil & trans oil

Okay, I'm not hear to start any fights, so everyone behave. LOL

I'm a amsoil lover by heart. But this is my first MB I've owned, so I'm in need of some help.

The amsoil website stated that I can use the series 3000 Synthetic 5w-30 will work just fine for my 87 300 sdl. I have about four gallons of it. But it seems to good to be true. I was under the understanding that I'm in need of a thicker oil like 15w-40.

So let me know if I can use a thinner oil in central Texas where I don't have to worry about cold weather, but I do have to worry about those 101 degrees July 4th days.

Now on to the Rear Diff, what weight of oil is everyone using? Would 75W-90 work.

For the tranny I'm planning on ordering some Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid. I'm all about preventative repair.

Lastly, I do plain on flushing out my radiator system and replacing the coolant with standard MB coolant.

Thank you so much for your help, I have alot to learn about these MB, and this forum and the search button are going to come in handy.

Thanks again,

Michael

Amsoil is great stuff, but 5w30 is to thin for the 603 look at your owners manual. You need an oil with a 40 or 50 for the second number.

Amsoil 5w40 would be excellent oil, probably better than Delvac 1. 15w40 would be fine as well, depends how cold it gets.

Next time I do a trans fluid change I'm switching to Amsoil.

Amsoil is basically Mobil 1 base oil with Amsoil's own additive package.

That's what I have heard as well. I only get it because I have a cheap source for Amsoil here where I work, but Mobil 1 (from walmart etc) would do fine as long as it isn't thinner than 15w-40 for where the OP is.

Amsoil is wayyy too expensive. I'd much rather use Rotella Synthetic and replace it 2x as often. And for the tranny, I change it yearly regardless of mileage (usually 18k or less) with Valvoline Dexron VI synthetic. Its good stuff, the tranny shifts excellent with it. And its WAY cheaper.

When a quart of oil costs as much as 2 bottles of 100% natural squeezed orange juice...then it costs too much. I'd rather save the $$ on the car fluids so I can put good fluids in myself.

Amsoil "premium heavy duty advanced soot control" 15w-40 at Car Quest $8.98 per gallon - regular price. Meets MB specifications 228.1/228.3/229.1.

C Watts,

Is that $8.98 a gallon $8.98 a quart for the Amsoil 15W-40 oil?

Where are Car Quest stores located? I have never seen any of them in the Northeast.

Iam using Amoil 15w-40 Diesel & Marine. the price in my price list is $5.20
a qt and retail $6.90 a qt. I don`t know where they get $8.98. thats way
over for a qt and way under for a gallon.

Iam using their atf also, and the trans shifts really smooth. I always ran
dexron atf before, but when I shifted to the synthetic there was a big
difference. Now I didn`t do this until I had 331000 miles. I also put in a
new K1 kit at the same time. so maybe there was help on both sides.
but it doesn`t miss a beat on the shifting.

Now my daughter lives just around the corner from the Amsoil warehouse
in Portland, Or. so when Iam up their I just get it there. no state sales
tax, and no shipping either. so that helps on the price.

let me restate that for clarity.

I got it at Car Quest in Cary NC. They supply indy garages but still have some OTC public sales.

Amsoil 15W-40 motor oil

$8.98 NC sales tax 7% not included. (eight dollars and ninety eight cents) for a gallon (one container) net four quarts, 3.8 liters.
Normal price, after I asked and the bar code scanner confirmed what the employee told me.

On the label:

Synthetic 12 TBN
Premium Heavy Duty Diesel and Marine
Product code AME - 1G

Since Car Quest can sell wholesale to the public, they don't pay what the "home dealer" would pay. I think it also helps if they can buy by the truckload.
IIRC the quart prices were just under $5.00. Looking at my invoice the "list price" is $14.97.

Odd, I don't find the words "premuim HD 15W40 listed on the AMsoil website.
I believe that stuff is a Blend. The only 15W40 oil Amsoil sells that has a 228.1 rating is their type PCO, a synthetic Blend
https://www.amsoil.com/storefront/SearchResult.aspx?CategoryID=228

Their 15W40 HD Diesel and Marine oil is type AME and lists for $6.90/Qt
Their PCO is $5.95, obviously "watered down" synthetic. There is about a 10% discount on those prices unless you sign up as a dealer which I've never done.

I didn't know Carquest carried Amsoil, I'll have to check that out.
I've been buying AME by the 2.5 Gal jug, it almost takes one of those to fill the 603's and I've been changing out at between 6 to 8 K miles or more on one occasion close to 10K. I swap a new filter about half way and top it up and keep going. I've done analysis at Blackstone and they advise there's lots of life left in the oil. New rinigs helps with low blow-by also
I think either of these is great stuff for cars with hydraulic lifters but a waste on an older diesel unless your in very cold climates, then the 5W40 would be a good choice for the winter.
