NYC area people ...Need Help.............

The Automatic Tranny in my 1983 300sd is slipping very bad, the car doesn't move at all in any direction. It could be a broken B2 piston, but I haven't checked that yet, and I'm not so sure thats the culprit.

I want my car back on the road, but my finances couldn't be worse. My mechanic said a rebuild would set me back over $1000. I just can't do it.

Is anyone parting out a car that has a good transmission?

Automatic or 4 speed, I could go with either. ( I guess no is a good time to do the conversion I've been wanting to do.)

I want to save the car, I don't want to part with it, but if no one comes up with anything I'm going to have to sell it. I don't want to.

If any of you guys around here are up to doing the job, let me know. It's too cold this time of year for me to work outside. I don't have a garage. I wish this happened in the summer.

SOOO, to conclude , any help at all ; ideas , suggestions , if you have parts, let me know , if you can do the work, let me know................

Have you made sure the tranny fluid is at the proper level?

These cars can be expensive.....its always a risk you take with having one.

I'm not following the logic here.

If the B2 piston is the problem, the mechanic should be able to fix that for less than $200.

If he's going to remove and replace the entire transmission with a unit that you found from a forum member..........it's going to cost at least $500.

I presume that you're not about to R & R the transmission yourself??

The least costly approach is to troubleshoot the transmission that you currently have in the vehicle. Hopefully, it's repairable at a reasonable cost.

OK, so we pretty much diagnosed this as NOT a B2 Piston Failure.

the clutches are most likely worn and don't have enough of a mating service to move the car.

I'm looking for a cheap quick fix. a good used tranny that has just been pulled from a running car or all the parts to do a manual swap.

Let me know, you guys have all been very helpful thus far ( through PMs)

Like some of the others have suggested, take the time to fully investigate. Drop the transmission pan and see if it is full of 'bits" from the clutches. Also check the filter. But first thing is check the 'contraption' on top of the valve cover that the bowden cable is conected to, make sure it hasn't come loose and gone into a 'backwards' position. If all three have been checked, and you are sure it isn't a vacuum issue, then replace/repair. I speak from experience, I was ripped off for $2500 for a "rebuild" I didn't need!!!

Youve got to keep your thinking straight

If money is the problem, then you have to focus on getting a used automatic transmission. This thinking that a manual 4 speed install would be a quick, cheap fix is way off the mark, and you just don't know what you are talking about. There is really only one way to do that and that is to have the complete donor car to get "all" the parts from and even then you still would likely have to buy a new clutch and get the flywheel re-surfaced, plus the driveline would have to be modified. So, if money is a big factor, get on the phone with the junkyards and see who has a correct transmission and find out what kind of guarantee they offer for the price. Then you still are looking at I would think a minimum of $600.00 plus parts and fluid for the install. Not fun, nor funny, just the simple facts of life. They are great cars, but they do wear out. Can't get around it. Transmissions and various parts of the drive line are the most replaced parts.

the clutch discs are toast, I dropped the pan and on he bottom of the pan, there was a thick layer of debris.

Money is a problem, but I can wrench, so I would do the install. However I can't rebuild a automatic tranny. I have in the past just installed new clutches in a Clutch pack in a BMW tranny, it was very easy, because that clutch pack was the first thing once the bell housing and the pump came off. I don't know much about the 722 so I wouldn't know where to begin.

but I woul over extend myself to do the manual swap.
