W123 engine mount replacement
The engine mounts on my 300D are totally shot. I have a few questions about replacing them though.
Firstly, can i just support the engine with the oil pan while i work on the mounts? Secondly, is there more to this system then just the motor mounts? Is there an engine shock absorber(s)? Does it have mounts that need to be replaced? I am going to go through and replace everything while im doing this. ********az lists a front 'T' mount under engine mounts for an '85 300D. I have never heard of such a thing. I dont see it on fastlane so i'm a little suspicious if it really exists. |

don't use a 2x4.. use a large 4x4 or 6x6
yes.. two shock absorbers... clean out the allen screws prior to unbolting them from the top and bottom. use a set of vice grips on the shaft to hold it in place so it does not turn.. thus making the job easier. Might as well order some new engine shock top mounts as well if the shocks are shot... |

With the engine shocks, you will need to order the hardware kit. This has the needed rubber bushings and metal washers needed for the engine shocks.

Is this mount also what you are calling the shock?

No, those are the mounts, my '84 CD has at least one engine shock.

While your in there you may want to check and change out your oil-cooler hose if there is any weeping as you have to remove the mounts to get them in. Better to do all at once. Get some degreaser and pressure wash under the car, much easier to work in a clean environment. You'll be amazed how much better your car will ride.

I think the flats on the shock shaft is 7MM. I know it is small, and tight
to get the wrench to line up. be careful with the engine shocks if you only loosen the lower end and jack up the engine. when I lowered the engine down, the shaft didn`t just drop back in the hole on the support. It hit the side and shoved the shock up through the top mount. I think that top mount is like $50.00 ea. I screwed up about 2 months ago, there was a guy on e-bay that sold both shocks, both upper mounts and the lower hardware for $54.00. have fun changing this stuff, you will be an expert when done. IF you remove the engine shocks before changing out the mounts, you reduce the risk of breaking the top mount. I made a little tool to keep the shaft from spinning from a small piece of black iron from Home Depot that I had left over from a different project. I had to use a drill and a dremel.
