85 300TDT feels like it's blowing in the wind

As I drive down the road in my 85 300TDT it feels a like the back end is being blown around by the wind. This happens at higher speeds, 40mph plus, and I am pretty sure it is not just the wind. I am not really sure whether it is the front or rear that is swaying, but if I had to guess, I would say the rear. Steering feels pretty tight with little play. Recently I had the front wheel bearing changed as part of regular maintenance. I have about 150k on it.

Thanks

Peter

I don't know 300t's, IIRC I've read swaying is usually indicative of subframe bushing failure.

Is your suspension system (SLS?) working ok?

not sure if the SLS is working. The fluid level is fine, and the car seems to sit well, so I guess it is.?

The first thing to check is rear sway bar links. Simple and easy to change. If one is gone, the amount of swaying is pretty surprising.

I would check the simple stuff...like lug nuts and tire pressure, they do make a big difference.

My acted in a similar way. It had 4 "matched brand" tires with good tread on it when I bought it...so it could not be the tires, heck they looked great! Well, just as I was about to give up, a friend with a tire store told me to bring it by his shop. In about 5 minutes, he showed me where the tires were actually made in 3 different years, I had 4 different diameters, and the lugs were loose (it nuts, but use a torque wrench)...not the best combo for good handling!

It can be the where the rubber meets the road.

Swaying

My 81 TD started doing the same thing when I put studded tires on the back. They are a different size than the front and appear to be a little skinny for the rims (Bundts). Seams in the road and the troughs (from studded tires) throw me all around. .02

Mine is doing the same thing. Always sways right. Let's say you hit rail road tracks, the back end will sway right, if you hit some washboards with snow or without, when the car gets light in back, it will sway to the right, 100% of the time.

Sounds like swaybar links? Sub frame bushings?

This spring it'll get new motor mounts, flex plates, tranny mounts, and the rear bushings. Might cure some vibration and some of that sketchy behavior.

300D and 300TD have totally different rear suspension issues.

Boise: had an alignment recently?

That would be the #1 suspect on my list. BMW E23s/E24s/E28s/E30s have a similar setup, and the symptoms posted are exactly what happens when their subframe bushings go bad (I just replaced 'em on one of mine).
