300d starter prob

Thanks in advance for any help----I have a 300d
that does not spin starter with key--however in troubleshooting this problem--starter will start car
if a hot wire is put directly on solenoid of starter
I would really apperciate a wiring diagram of this
car so I can find this prob is there a relay between
ignition switch and starter?

What year is your car? On the 123's, the only things between the starter and key switch are the shifter safety switch and a terminal block on the passenger side fender. Try jiggling the shifter and see if it starts.

my car did that and you could get it to start by giggling the shift stick. It is probably your solenoid. I had to eventually replace the starter because it got to the point where i was getting stranded. After the replacement starter i haven't had the problem ever since and its been at least a year.

do the vin's match title/body? if you have a D you should have 4 round headlights, two larger than the others, if you have an SD you will have two square headlights, and two rhombus ish yellow fog lights... the 85 has some funky stuff that the older models did not have, but the starter system is KEY, neutral safety switch, solenoid... not much else. all three parts are known to get flaky over the years and fail at some point. if the jumper starts it, that eliminates the solenoid, leaving the safety switch and your key... try starting it in Neutral instead of park and see if it works. if not, it's time to get out the meter and trace the problem.

Thanks for all the help---I have determined that starter and solenoid are probably OK
--when I jumper from 1 terminal to terminal 3 it starts---this vehicle did not start for
previous owner with key and had to be towed---something is weird when key is
turned to glow pos 3 isn' that the start position??--any way I turn key to that position
and glow plugs--then lite goes out and we hot wire 1to 3---and it starts and runs but
only in position 3--if I turn it back to position--2-----it starts and runs for about 10
seconds and then stalls???--so I guess I have two problems any suggestions??
----also thanks for the wirirg page but --I can't get it clear enought to read
the wire colors probably my fault---maybe you or anyone can email me a picture of
wiring diagram I noticed it was page 14 of 30 --before this is over I might need
most if not all of them----also I wiggled shifter as suggested but didn't help even
in neutral If there are any previous threads containing wiring diagrams please lead
me to them-------again thanks all

Sounds like the second problem is a slow shut-down. The engine should run only in position three. Position two is the accessory position. (Off-accy-run-start.)

Insert key, turn to position three, wait for glowplug light to go out, turn to position four, starter should turn over. Sounds like you have a problem with the starter stop positon of the key. When you have tried to start the car once by going into positon four then the key will lock you out from position four until you go back to position one. I hope this helps you out and not confuse you.
