G.P. Question

My 96 E300D won't start when the temp goes below 40. As soon as the GP light goes off the red and green lights under the mirror come on, and then it won't even crank. I replaced the K40 but that didn't do any good. So now I'm looking to do the gps.I'm a little worried about not being able to get them all safely out. Don't even want to think of removing the head to drill out any that break off. Question is will it start with only 5 new ones?
Thanks for any advice.

The red/green flashing lights ought to be a security/key issue.

Is yours a blade key?

It always starts when thetemp is above 40f?

If red/green lights flash alternating, lock car from outside then unlock car using blade key in drivers door.

See if starts.

If red green lights flash simultainously, replace battery in remote.

Car always starts in warm weather.
Will start in cold if I can plug it in.
Lights flash alternately.
Battery in remote is good.
Don't usually lock car in garage but will try tomorrow.
Can the problem be something besides the GP ?

Is more likely that you have more than one problem.

How is cars battery voltage? New batt, old batt?

If you have bad GP's, you ought to get a CEL on the dash. Something like PO380 or P1365, 1367, etc.....Is the light lit up? GP's can be tested using an Ohm meter which is preferable to replacing them w/o knowing if they are the problem.

You shouldn't have to plug in yours in FL......

Never gotten any code messages. Only a display that says to check the engine electronics. Occasionally if I drive it real hard the gp light will come on for a few minutes then go off.
Battery checked out ok last month when we replaced the K40.Don't know how old it is.
Car did the same thing last winter and I hoped that a new K40 would fix it.
As long as I plug it in it will start right up,but it is aggravating and I'm afraid it will get worse.

The check engine light is telling you that the car has stored fault codes.

Get them read and report back.

A simple OBDII scanner will retreive them.

Definitely find out what those codes are.

If as you say "it won't even crank" then you have other problems besides GP's.

With bad GP's (and cold weather), it will crank and crank and crank but just won't start.
