Problem is not the kick-down switch...

1983 300CD

WIth ignition on, the solenoid doesn't operate (click) when pushing the kick-down switch.

1. Kick-down switch tests OK with an ohm meter.

2. Two wires go to the kick-down switch; the Black/Yellow/Red wire has 12v. The Black wire has 0v. Touch them together - nada.

3. Further testing reveals that the black wire is not connected to ground

4. When I connect the Black/Yellow/Red wire to Ground the transmission solenoid operates OK

Anyone know the location where the Black wire from the kickdown switch terminates?

Cheers!

.... suppose I could just run another ground wire to the kick down switch, but I'd rather do it properly - and trace where the black wire from the kickdown switch goes.

Appreciate any/all advice.

Cheers!

...it's the kickdown solenoid

My earlier diagnosis was flawed; The click I heard when shorting the kickdown switch 12v supply line to ground was not the KD solenoid - it was the ignition relay cycling. At the time of the test I was using a battery charger to supply power, because the battery is out of the car for battery tray R&R. I guess fuse #14 would have blown with the battery in circuit

I traced the black wire from the KD switch; it goes directly to the KD solenoid (rubber boot connector at rear of transmission).

The KD solenoid on my car tests open circuit - measured between the solenoid connector and ground. I plan to replace the KD solenoid when I do a trans fluid change.

Cheers!
