1991 350SD has a pressure operated wastegate so there's nothing to do except disable EGR if that's your desire. Won't make a big difference power-wise.

Basically correct, Sixto. Except rather than creating vacuum, I think it may just reduce boost pressure slightly to assist the entry of exhaust gasses the intake tract. The 86/87 setups used an ARV (air recirc valve?) on the turbo itself, later engines went to the flapper in the mixer housing as seen on the 602.962 USA motor.

Getting stoked about doing this mod on my 91 and my 92. Trouble is.....both of my cars are working perfectly with the original set-up. Part of me almost wants something to go wrong so I'll be MOTIVATED. Maybe EGR deletion should be motivation enough.

Such a wealth of information in this thread....would be great if someone was able to distill it into one compact yet full DIY article.

Everyone's taken a step back so it's up to you, shertex, to put it together

Well, I think ACTUALLY HAVING DONE THE PROCEDURE should be a prerequisite for writing a DIY. So, for now, I'm disqualified. I nominate benmack1. He just did the procedure and he has excellent descriptive abilities.

I would suggest gsxr, but he's already contributed to this thread in so many other ways. But he'd obviously do a great job.

I'm fixing to do the mod on a 93 if I can find the actuator. Seems that the one for the link earlier in the thread do not have any more and were unable to tell me when they would get more. I believe the ones on ebay will work, it is just a matter or pulling the old one out.

I'll put some thought into maybe putting pictures together to do a diy. I've got an ML in the shop to resolve some issues with before I get on this one.

I emailed them and they stated they were out of stock and were unable to tell me when they would get more. I believe that is the p/n I inquired about.

Must be recent....a forum member who just did his mod within last few weeks got his from them.

David, I am guessing you are referring to me here. Just for the record, I bought my actuator back in February and didn't get around to the repair until this summer so they may have run out awhile ago.

Just to encourage folks (if you can get the right part) this really is a simple upgrade to do. I would be happy to write this up as a DIY, but unfortunately I didn't take pics which is essential in my mind to a good DIY. All the details are in here but just all over the place.

The problem is this is an intimidating area of the car to work on until the light bulb goes off on how truly simple this all is. Once folks 'get it', this is a trivial repair. Costs <$100 generally, takes maybe an hour to do with no tools other than normal and a couple jack stands and some band aids.

The funny part is I recently took the car to a reputable INDY here in Chapel Hill for what turned out to be a plugged ALDA line (I am ashamed I gave up so soon and took it in). They wanted to reinstall all my vac lines and charge me even after I tried to explain this was just like a 1985 300D now (just got a blank stare from the mechanic). The mechanic never did understand me. Fortunately, I told him to please not touch my car further and I took it home and did what i should have and diagnosed it (with great forum help!!) and fixed it myself. Point being, with these mods, at some point you become your own mechanic as some of these part changers that call themselves mechanics can no longer deal with you because they don't even try to think about a problem. I think they are just following a service manual line by line and not thinking about how a motor actually works. Anyway, I am ranting I guess. Bottomline, every one of these cars should have this mofication done to them IMHO!!! Also note, it should probably be done with a simultaneous installation of a boost gauge too.

If pics are what you need, I bet gsxr's collection should be more than adequate: Index of /images/OM602_intake

Last month (August 2012) I ordered and received the Wastegate Actuator from ATP turbo. Sorry to say I have no idea if mine was the only / last one they had.

Hmmm I just placed an order for one. I suppose I'll get an email here shortly saying they are out of stock.

I know some of you who did this mod did so because you were having performance issues. For those of you who were NOT having any performances issues, what improvements did you notice if any? My 91 and 92 300D are working just great with the stock actuator. So I may wait for a problem to arise before I do the mod. I know the EGR delete would be an immediate benefit but I'm wondering what else.

If, when I do the mod, I remove the plug on the intake manifold for a pressure source, does anyone have a spec for that fitting? Someone in the thread mentioned this Fitting, Pressure Port, 90 degree, 1/8" NPT to 7/32" Barb Fitting : atpturbo.com but I didn't know if that was correct.

Thanks.
