Front Seat Removal, 78 300SD

Here is what I have on the front of the passenger seat and prolly the driver seat as well. The back came off with a 10mm socket, but the front. . .WTH???
The bolt, shown upside down, has a philips head and the bottom (has some kind of round really thick washer type of thing. I cannot get to the head of the bolt, I can barely get a finger under to feel the head.
What now, brown cow???
Thanks!

Ginny-

I can't really make out what's on the head of that fastener, but if it's not a 10mm bolt w/normal six-side head, it's not GI. Unless someone else can make it out, I can't be of much help. If I HAD to make a guess, looks like a torx bit head- but that would be a GM or other mfg, not MB.

It is usually the rear bolts that are hard because you can't get the seat up to get at them.

The 'nut' is completely round, not chewed round, but a round washer-like nut that won't let me get to it.
I don't have the same bolt heads on the front as on the back.

Can you look under the car and see if there is a nut. Not sure why someone would do it like that but.............

Nope, nothing under the car.
The nut you see has a bolt head under it that I can feel.
The whole thing is up off the floor but there is nothing else that can be seen or reached to undo to get the`seat off.

It's like that on both sides so I assume it was factory like that.
Anyone else got a W116 that can go look?

My next step is to just take the sheepies to an interior place and have them instal them. I just cannot see ANYTHING else that would let the seat come off the floor.

This in not a difficult one, just one of those "duh" situations.
You are not looking at the seat fastner, but a fastner for the
seat track. Your seat elavator is in the wrong position
and is actually covering the seat bolt that needs to be removed.
Use the elavator adjust on the side of the seat, and move the seat
all the way down. It will move back at the same time, uncovering your
bolts.

I just saw that this is the front bolts.
move the seat all the way to the forward position,
Sit in the seat.....I know it is cramped.
now pull that lever on the side of the seat......and put your back into it,
most have not been moved in years so it may be difficult.
now move the seat back again with the lever shown in your pic.....TADA

You so ROCK!! That was it and I now have navy sheepies on my two front seats. I'll get pics in the morning when there is light. We were running against time and the light and just made it, screwing in the last bolt with a flashlight.
Oh, and while I had the drivers seat out, I added padding to the bottom and back of the seats. Much firmer and I sit up higher than I did even with the elevation as high as it could go. What a great day!
New sheepies AND I got myself a nice big mechs tool kit!

Thanks so much!!

Cool. I'm glad you got it.
The first time I had seats to get out
I had the same problem, only it was the back bolts
I couldn't get to.

Ok yesterday I went to go look at wait yall were talking about, I saw some ants in my car, small almost clear looking ants now I am trying to remove my seats to clean everything. I did get my seat to move all the way down and back at the same time, uncovering the front bolts. Now how do I find the back bolts, I have the MB service manual and it shows the bolts, but the bolts are not there on my car. 1980 300SD

Move the seat all the way forward and up. Typically requires a helper pushing from behind to accomplish this.

You move the seat FORWARD by pulling up on the lever that is on the front of the seat. You move it UP by pulling up on the lever that is on the side of the seat. Pull up that lever and scootch the seat up and forward. The side lever is for elevating the seat so you can see over the dash better. Moving that lever and pull the seat forward will expose the back bolts. They use a 10mm socket, BTW.

I have done some pretty bad ones myself.
If you move the seat all the way front, then climb in the back seat, lean forward and pull up on the elevator, then use your legs (and shoulder) to move the seat elevator up.
