compression test?

1979 maple yellow 240D 4-speed

Gone and fondly remembered:
1980 orient red 240D 4-speed

Gone and NOT fondly remembered:
1982 Chna Blue 300TD

Other car in the stable:
2013 VW Jetta Sportwagen TDI / 6-speed MT

The problem came on suddenly. It has not been a growing problem.

Wouldn't a compression problem start small and get progressively worse?

Sounds like glow plugs that need to be checked for resistance, and voltage. They can fail anytime.

My glowplug dash light comes on. Could the glowplugs still be the culprit?

Yes. If you have even one bad one in cold weather that will translate to hard starting and rough running for a minute after start up.

Could also be an air leak in the fuel system if it starts after priming.
