Hard to start when engine is cold

I've run into a recurring situation with my '85 300TD. It's hard to start when the engine is cold. The outside temperature does not appear to make a difference. When the engine is warm there is no problem.

If I pump the fuel primer pump about 50 times the car will eventually start when cold.

I've performed a valve adjustment, replaced the fuel filters, and verified the battery but this doesn't appear to have helped. There is nothing leaking onto the ground.

Any suggustions as to the problem?

Wouldn't a compression problem start small and get progressively worse?

Sounds like glow plugs that need to be checked for resistance, and voltage. They can fail anytime.

My glowplug dash light comes on. Could the glowplugs still be the culprit?

Yes. If you have even one bad one in cold weather that will translate to hard starting and rough running for a minute after start up.

Tom's correct. Do a thread search for GP issues and GP relays.

Could also be an air leak in the fuel system if it starts after priming.

is your clear filter full of air when you go to start?
this sounds like classic primer pump leaking. I bet you park your car with the nose up. try parking it with the nose down, I bet you get a puddle of fuel under your primer pump.

Yes, the clear filter is full of fuel. I park on level ground.

Is there a way to check for air leaks?
