Endless timing chain!
Not that I wanted to, but I've found a source for endless timing chains for the 617 engine...
I ordered a chain through the local Shucks, due to discounts I have with them, and ended up with a Beck/Arnley #024-0044. Checking the chain to see what type of master link it came with, I quickly found no link, and no openings in the chain. Up until this point, I hadn't realized that they were available this way, as even the MB dealers apparently can't source these any more, even though they are mentioned in the FSM for overhauls. This would be all fine and good, but for the fact that I'm not over hauling this engine, and needed to roll the chain in from the top! Well, I just wanted to let others know that a source and part number are available if needed, and warn those who aren't overhauling that that part number won't be much help! Back to Shucks for a refund, and off to order one from Phil, it looks like!

How about this?
Sounds kind of dumb that they would send a "made up" chain and no repair link. Why don't you check with the vendor for a "repair link" It is a pretty simple operation to grind off one link to open the chain, roll it in from the top per the plan and close it up with the repair link. That repair link has to be crimped in a very professional manner. Don't short cut that part of the job.

He is better off returning it and getting a IWIS chain. I ask a question as to the quality of Beck Arnley cains many months ago and while answers I got were not definative it was enoug to convince me that if I had to replace a chain I would get tie IWIS one. Some member said the pins on the Beck Arnley were thinner (smaller).
