Windshield Washer Foot Pump?

Alright, my windshield washer foot pump has been performing poorly and spraying fluid on my feet for quite awhile. Now it has decided to give up the ghost period. Any place to buy new ones or easy retrofits?

Regards,
Kyle

Don't know if it's a match or a retrofit but early Mercury Capri's (early '70's, Ford Werke AG) had a manual foot washer pump.

Really

I thought the floor mounted "bulb" on the floor for the windshield washer went out with 62 or 63 Rambler or Mopar Valiant

hmm

My idea has boiled down to this:

What if I was to retrofit the electric pump and bottle from the W123, run twelve volts to it directly from battery, and hook up current switch to it, turning on wipers and simultaneously spraying the windshield washers.

Easier said than done? Does my elementary knowledge of electrics (thank god I own a diesel) make any sense?

Does the foot pedal pump not have a switch that swipes the wipers a few times with a press of the pedal?

In our 220D, that foot pedal provided the intermittent function for the wipers that didn't exist otherwise. Didn't even need to push hard enough to make the washer do its thing. Really do believe it had/has an electrical switch as well as the bulb. Of course that was on a W115 chassis.

The 74 Dart I used to drive had one. Very reliable - a much better system than using air from the spare tire like old Beetles did.

I do believe it does have a wiper pulse switch on it. I think I still have the one from my old 190D, I can look if you want. Another option, you can go to wal mart, and they carry a generic 12v electric washer pump, small thing about 1" around and 2" long, works quite well, about $20 or so. You could just hook that to run off of the footswitch on your old pump, for a factory look & feel (with a hidden pump), and that would also allow the wipers to work with it. I bought one for an old 77 chevy truck a while back (we all know how crummy those old piston pumps were on the 70's GM wiper motors-when they do work).

That was my thought exactly!

Many years ago, The foot-pump bulb in my '72 W114 250 disintegrated. I strapped an electric washer-pump for a mid '80s Chevy Cavalier (very cheap) to one of the foot-pump mounting screws and wired it directly to the 12-volts coming off the foot-pump switch plug. I then connected the pump's ground wire to one of the foot-pump mounting screws

I did have to cut the foot-switch feed to the wipers, as I found that even without depressing the pump-pedal, the electric pump would keep running whenever the wipers were switched on at the stalk. But that wasn't a big problem as I had no trouble remembering to manually switch on the wipers if I wanted them while I operated the washers.

As I recall, I connected the supply from the valve on the washer reservoir (formerly connected to the rubber bulb) directly to the input nipple on the electric pump. Then I ran a separate hose from the pump output, through the firewall, direcly to the line for the nozzles.

Happy Motorng, Mark
