Yes, Deutz tractors were sold here in the states up to the mid-1990s. I used to work across the street from a Deutz tractor dealer.
Here is a link to video of a 15- to 20-year old Deutz tractor: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VaCAYpPGtmk&feature=related . If you like the sound of diesels, air-cooled Deutz diesels are for you. They have a raw, punchy sound because the noise isn't shielded by a water jacket.

U-boats?
Didn't Deutz make the diesel engines in WWII U-boats?

I wouldn't be surprised.
Mercedes and mitsubishi also made fighters. If you look at the machinery of ww2 you will find many familiar names. Tom W

And Fuji Heavy Industries, maker of Subaru cars was known back then as Nakajima. Nakajima manufactured aircraft for the Imperial Army - Mitsubishi made them for the Navy.

Mitsu made the Zero.
Rolls Royce and packard made the engines that powered half of our aircraft. Mercedes engines could be found in the ME109, and various tanks and trucks. Maybach made the engine for the Panther. FYI I beleive the M120 was the first V12 MB made for mass production since the upsidedown V12 in the ME109. Trying to attrack a rather different buyer it seems! ![]()

Packard engines in pairs powered pt boats. Caddy flatheads (two of them) powered tanks. Messerschmit fighters for Germany which after the war built some interesting little three wheel cars.
Of course the engineering genius Ferdinand Porsche designed a lot of the war machines including the vw and (correct me if wrong) the Tiger and Panther tanks. Rolls Royce aircraft engines were built here by (I think) Allison. I believe Allison also built engines of their own design too. Tom W

Here's some history:
http://www.magirusdeutz.co.uk/ Magirus-Deutz used to build trucks and buses in Mainz, Germany before Italian car manufacturer Fiat formed Iveco and bought them. (although the official version sounds different) They closed down the factory in Mainz in the early 80s. Bastards, hundreds of jobs just gone. Yes, you guessed it: I grew up in Mainz.

Im a field engineer for a heavy civil/ building contracting firm. I'd say 90% of the air compressors and light tower generators on all the construction sites I've ever been on are powered by Duetz diesel engines. They just run and run and run, and construction sites are a kind of worst case scenario as far as machine neglect and the idiot factor. Multiple unskilled individuals moving and refueling and using and abusing equipment that is run hard 16-24 hours a day.

The Porsche 911 also uses individual cylinders and individual cylinder heads. Air cooled too (through '98). Overhead cam prevents you from working on just one cylinder though.
These Deutz motors must be pushrod then?

I always thought the 911 had one head for each side of the car.
You could have an overhead cam and it be run by a shaft and two bevel gears, I believe. Tom W

Can't see an overhead cam in the picture linked in the first post. Must be pushrods?

Does Deutz make an engine that would fit well in a W123? Love that sound... and that smoke
