Anyone familiar with Deutz air cooled diesels?

Came across this thread about an interesting motorhome. Wondering if anyone is familiar with and has an opinion about the Deutz air cooled diesels?

Here's another video. How does air cooling work underwater?

I used to rebuild deutz engines, very very well designed easy to work on engines. All alluminum engines except for the cast iron block. They have individual cylinders and heads so if something goes wrong with one, you dont have to pull all the heads. overheating isnt a problem either, as long as you have airflow, the cylinders will score before the heads have a problem. very very well designed. Heres a picture of one that ive rebuilt many many times.

that on the end is a very efficient fan that is pully driven, then you have the air chamber and then the cylinders have fins that helps disperse of the heat. Whats great about deutz is that a rebuild is very very simple, sometimes expensive but very simple. if you want to do a major rebuild, you can buy the entire top end set wich includes the pistion, rings, piston rings and clips, and the cylinder, then you just put your old head onto it, and you have a brand new engine.

I work with a certified Deutz nut. He loves Deutz engines because they are easy work on and rebuild. My co-worker is used to working with ag and industrial applications, not automotive applications, however.

Thats a pretty nifty idea, makes for additional complication which is overcome by ease of rebuild.

Every once in awhile I come across a larger boat with Deutz diesels. They are pretty rare in the states. I don't think all of them are air cooled, I have no idea how you would put an air cooled engine in a boat?

When my uncle got his RV, which was pretty much a coach bus it had either a large CAT or Cummins diesel, I forget. Since it was a regular over the road bus and not one of those dogs based on heavy duty trucks it cruised 70-75 with ease.

Reminds me in some ways of a type1 VW engine only better with the "single cylinders"
I wonder how heavy they are, would be cool to mount one to a VW, but what a project, especially thr right gearing. VW BAJA diesel!!

Mercedes is using the individual cylinder heads on their large (non-car) engines.

Most large diesels use individual cylinder heads.

Yep...

The design of this engine was conceived through a Deutz/General Electric partnership. 45° V16 4-stroke with 6250HP. Twin-turbo as well, one for each bank.

I find it interesting the water cooled aluminum heads have cracking problems but the air cooled aluminum one do much better in that area.

Thats pretty big! I have seen V12 Deutz diesels, look kind of like that. Rare SOB's in this country though, getting one fixed or parts could be a PITA. The nice thing about CAT is you can get parts and tech support anywhere.

At least in the marine world I really like CAT's, Cummins, and Yanmar. Volvo is so so, but their parts support sucks. Not to mention the prices! Detroit is DOA, used to make nice stuff though. IMHO Yanmar's are a bit clunky and smoking compared to a similer Volvo, but their parts are cheaper and so easy to get!

I only remember seeing deutz tractors in Germany. I think they sell them here now too....huge things like monster versions of semi tractors with huge tractor tires on them.

I gotta think it is a quality power plant.

Yes, Deutz tractors were sold here in the states up to the mid-1990s. I used to work across the street from a Deutz tractor dealer.

Here is a link to video of a 15- to 20-year old Deutz tractor: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VaCAYpPGtmk&feature=related . If you like the sound of diesels, air-cooled Deutz diesels are for you. They have a raw, punchy sound because the noise isn't shielded by a water jacket.

U-boats?

Didn't Deutz make the diesel engines in WWII U-boats?
