85 300D- No new Transmission- New Engine!

So, my 85's transmission (non-functioning glittery burnt fluid) is different from all the other years! So, either I find an 85 trans on the Big Island or buy one from the mainland ~$1000 or...

I do have an 80 300D with working trans and engine as a parts car. I am thinking I will just pop the engine and trans out of that one put it into the 85...

My question is, aside from the motor mounts are there any other parts I should think about replacing while the engine is out of the car? Any other maintenance type things that could be done?

would be a good time to clean up the engine bay and the motor. Also might want to do any body work in front if front.

what makes the 85 different from other years with turbo motors. I have one i have to replace in an 85 and all the searching around here seems to indicate that compatability is not a big issue. higher stall speed torque converter. I think they will go from other years with the turbo. hopefully someone who knows will chime in.

I'd think long and hard about replacing a turbo motor with a non-turbo before I did it.

You can use any non 4 bolt pan transmission. Just make sure two swap the electronic pickup from the 85.

Your '80 is a 722.1 transmission. Looks different, but has a modulator like the later 722.3.

The only difference between an 85 and any other turbo tranny is the electronic pickup on the side. And you can move that from one to the other. Now the TC is diff as well but you probably don't need to replace that.

I don't mind the change of subject...

The 80 that I am taking the engine and transmission from looks to have some crazy vacuum system. Does this relate to the transmission or can I leave it behind and use the simpler system from the 85 turbo.

BTW- I own a non-turbo and am actually impressed with how peppy it is so I am not all that concerned about changing the turbo to a non-turbo. Anybody out
there need an 85 turbo engine? It runs well, just the transmission is bad.

As it happens, one dufference in peppiness comes from the non-turbo's 3.47 rear-end ratio, so unless, along with the engine/tranny, you swap in that unit for the 2.85 differential in your 85, you'll definitely notice a loss of pep.

Happy Motoring, Mark
