Geez Kerry I don't recall. I know it was a 4 cyl diesel and looked pretty similar to the one in my 82 240D so I assumed it was a 2.4L. I must have checked out the engine number to confirm that (that and the importation papers and mechanical repair receipts probably indicated 2.4L). Is the 615 the 2.2L? THe vehicle would have been slower than a slug (clam?) if it had the 2.2L!! Once you got it up to speed it could keep itself going at 50-60mph, on the flats. Like driving a boat on the road with that big steering wheel, non-power assisted of course. Neat bus, very well finished inside with quality wood construction, too bad I could not keep it... I encountered a very steep hill coming back from camping with the kids once, one where you can't build any speed until it looms in front of you; I started barely in third, quickly downshifted to 2nd, and finally had to downshift to 1st and BARELY made it up to the crest of the hill (that was a very steep hill on a backroad).
And who knows, perhaps the engine had been changed in it at some time.
I attach a couple of pictures for interest...
Oh, I sold the truck to 3 guys who had recently graduated from university and wanted to go on a road trip. They drove all the way to California and back (I'm in the North-East)! WHen they got back, one of them wrote me an angry email saying that the alternator had gone on them somewhere along the way. I felt like telling him: kid, you drove a 30+ year old vehicle that ably carried you and your buddies across the continent and back, across deserts etc., and you're complaining that you had to replace an alternator??? Some people, sheesh...
