SD is the full size (S class of today), and was much bigger. D is the mid-size (E class today). SD had far more electronics and was more for the luxery minded.

Actually the s class is longer but sleeker and does not weigh much more than a 300dt. It is geared higher so will probably return a bit better economy on the highway.

The s class if the earlier from 81 to 85 is somewhat more electrically equipped so there is a bit more to maintain.

Both are nice high quality vehicles.

Good luck.

Tom, I believe the '85 D and SD both have 2.88 gears. Is that correct?

Yes, that is correct. I misspoke. If it gets better economy it will be from superior aerodynamics.

I believe that is true, especially if you drive it like Brian.

I'm trying to come up with any additional electrical devices other than the seats, the oil pressure gauge and the tach..........

Can you?

Not a lot of tricks here.........just keep it under 70 and don't use the brakes.

there is 1 for sale close to me, sounds like it would make a good member of the family "sd"

they want $1,000.oo, claimed to run well and no rust!

anything special i should look for? must be a reason why its so cheap, unless they are "new"
