Fuel lines from tank - leaking slow
Searched this one with few good answers. This was the best. Opinions please, I need t change bothe lines coming off the tank under the wagon's rear. (1985 300TD)
"On my wagon I was able to change the supply hose without draining the tank. I clamped the hose and removed it from the metal fuel line. Installed the new line on the metal fuel line, unclamped the tank end of the original line, pulled it off and then put my finger over the outlet. I was then able to quickly put the new hose on without losing too much fuel." |

Do you need to change just the rubber portions, or are the metal lines leaking like they were on mine? You can get bulk fuel line at the auto parts stores, just make sure it is rated for diesel.
Here are the posts about how I fixed my leaking fuel lines: http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w123-e-ce-d-cd-td-te-class/1354295-leaking-fuel-lines-repaired-today.html Leaking fuel lines repaired today

Just the rubber.. But the store didnt have braided.. only the pressurized line foir diesel. Whadya think? Even if it is temporary thats ok.. this needs to stop leaking where I am parked. Theres regular diesel in there now.
What about replacing the lines? Can air get in there? can I just change the hoses by doing one end at a time and crimping them with vice grips? |

Yes, the fuel comes out quick, but not in a very big stream, you can easily slip the new hose over the nipples without losing much fuel. I used a catch pan and only lost about 1/2 cup total. A vice grip would work great. Get the clamp near the tank and replace the other end of the hose first so the last connection is slipping the hose over the tank nipple. I didn't even have to use the primer pump when it was time to start it up.

That is good news! there are two lines there.. neither is pressurized, correct? Where does that second one go?

No pressure, just gravity pushing the fuel through the lines from the tank. One line is the supply line and one line is the return line.

Lines holding very well, no leaks. Have not started the beast yet though. Thanks for guidance CHAD300tdt. Will reply when wagon makes it to shop safely.
update: this was an effective means of changing these lines, losing fuel prior to startup without bleeding air is just fine. Be sure to expand (stretch / flare) the inside diameter of the ends of new fuel lines before removing old. Last edited by jt20; 04-20-2008 at 07:32 PM. Reason: conclusion |
