I am thinking that I remember something about an aircraft engine from way back, maybe WWI era, that was designed like this.

I remember my first diesel back in ~1971, it was a carburated 2-stroke diesel, operating at 35,000rpm, ran on a blend of Nitro-Methane and alcohol with oil, it was in my dune-buggy. My brother ran a similar engine in his airplane. Oh, it was a COX engine powered toy.

Humm, I see they stole Gizmodo's format....

Anyways...Think of all the added frictional losses involved with the extra pistons. I doubt it would make up for the reduced efficiency that 2-strokes have over 4-strokes.

So I guess you could call them diesels because they had glow-plugs?

There were diesel kits sold for these model engines, which used no glow plug but had an adjustable head volume for starting. I've never run one.

I don't think you can consider the glow-plug model engine a diesel. The fuel does not ignite because of pressure, but because of the catalytic reaction with the platinum on the hot wire in the glow plug.

wow two rods on the outer pistons, takes a real man to get those tolerances right. cant imagine working on that in a combat zone. plus so much recipricating weight seems like it will tear itself apart even at 3800 RPM

You hooked a battery to the glow-plug to start it, then left the battery behind. It was compression-ignited, diesel, no question. Cool little engines, but probably really dirty.

Yes, here is some info on both the older WWII era Junkers and the newer Dair made in Britian: http://www.billzilla.org/ideas4.htm

The differences are the TARDEC uses a single crank with long connecting rods where as the DAIR uses dual cranks and short connecting rods. The DAIR is rated at 100hp from a 200lb motor.

It's somewhat similar to the Deltic Diesel design with opposing pistons.

"320 HP, redlines around 3800 RPM. and tips the scales at only 380 lbs." You guys know.. thats more horsepower than the new mercedes CDI.. and it only weighs 380lbs. the power to weight ratio is insane!
