IMHO used parts are a crapshoot, I don't waste my time with them. But you never know this roll of the dice may be a good move.
I would certainly be annoyed if it blew up in 18 months, but it's a pretty cheap gamble (it will have payed for itself in about six months anyway). If this one doesn't last I'll just buy a reman next time; as long as it doesn't decide to leave me stranded someplace/sometime too inconvenient. Hopefully, I'll get lucky this time. Sometimes you just roll the dice and see what happens. It will be an interesting little experiment either way.

You definetley need to check out about the torque converter/tranny. The crank snout is smaller on the 85s

Thanks, I will check; hopefully I won't end up waiting around for a new TC once he gets the engine out.

Close enough, maybe I could find a cheaper one but I got sick of shopping after a few hours of phone calls.

If indeed smaller, I don't think it matters because the torque converter bolts directly to the flex plate and the flex plate is the same part number as with all other 617.95x models. I have an '85 torque converter that I will be installing in my '83 as a performance mod.

Thanks, I need to talk to my indy and see what he knows about this issue. He seemed to think it wasn't a problem to use a '85 engine with a '82 tranny. I'll let you know what I learn.

FYI on the '85 stuff, some have the '84 Federal style trans attached. My SD does, it's a 10/84 build.

Thanks, this engine is definitely a federal, not a cali (that shouldn't affect the tranny connection); hopefully this won't turn into another "challenge." I would like to drive this thing again one of these days.

Craig, if you do go to So. Cal. swing by and check out Metric Motors in Canoga Park. you can see their operation.

Living in the rust bucket where good old 300's pop up often as parts cars cheap with great drivetrains it kills me to see this happen. I'm sure the same thing happens when someone who lives in the Southern states where rust free cars are the norm watches one of us restore a rust heap.

Anyways, I've got a 1985 complete drivetrain that I just pulled out of my 300TD in my garage. I doubt you'll need this, but if you need pictures or if I can help somehow with my components as reference, just let me know.
Best of luck!
Dave

Thanks for the offer; it's not really a problem, I just want the car finished already and this whole process takes a long time.

More silliness

I'm still trying to get this '85 engine shipped, what a PITA. I had a low mileage '85 617 lined up to be shipped, but the junkyard is still trying to tell me I can't use it in my '82. I have my indy ready to go (he's verified he can make it work), and I just need these clowns to ship the engine. I spent all day friday going around and around with them through the broker (nice kid who doesn't know anything), trying to tell them that I understand that the engine will not just drop in. All I'm really trying to do is get my hands on a good 617.952 long block, everything else will be swapped over or replaced anyway.

I suspect they are really trying to give me a higher mileage engine from an '84, or maybe they really don't know if the '85 will work. In any case, I've told them to either ship it or give me my money back. I'm getting very bored with this, my wife keeps telling me I should quit messing around and just order a reman engine (she's probably right). I was trying to save a few $1000 (seemed like a good idea at the time), and I've already had much more than a few $1000 worth of aggravation. Now it won't ship until at least monday. That's what I get for being cheap.

Either way, I'm wasting more time/effort than it's worth (I'm also wasting my indy's time by having him deal with these idiots). It will eventually get done, but it really shouldn't be this hard.
