Superior Kit fixed my flare !
Hey Guys , Special thanks to all who have posted on fixes for the flare problem .
I droped the pan and did not see too much sight of clutch residue on any part of my trans ... I was not sure how long the previous owner had run with this flare condition , i even found paper work from a local dealer that had no Idea what it was , and that was a fairlly recent invoice . I bought the superior kit and just changed out the K1 & K2 , none of my springs were broke , but the K1 seemed like the plastic pin was binding on it's self . I replace both with the one piece spring in each ...it feels great 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th . It was allmost undrivable ...I had to back peddle to let the trans catch every time you would give it a little peddle ...Its great now ! My Trans only has 85K on it ..hopefully it gose another 85K ...LOL Thanks to all you guys who had done the previous work and postings ! Greg

I think I will order a kit. Everything else is fixed and I am running out of things to do.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: The kit works great for fixing worn or broken accumulators. It made my badly flaring transmission almost perfect. It will not, however, make a worn out tranmission new again. If you've got 2-3 and 3-4 flaring this kit is one of the best investments you can make. Easy to install and less than 60 bucks. If you've got a transmission that jerks and slips, don't expect a cheap or easy fix.

Exactly what transmission models, or year models does this kit pertain to?
My 92 400E flares sometimes, but only when it has not warmed up.

It depends on how much of the kit you intend to use.
I only replaced the K1 and K2 springs, and that was a piece of cake. If you use all of the parts in the kit, you'll need to remove the valve body, and from what little I know, that can be intimidating. Assuming no prior knowledge, I wouldn't be comfortable relying on just the included instructions when removing the valve body, but if you can do that, the instructions will tell you what goes where. For those like me, here's a pictorial on the MB K1 kit that may be helpful. The K2 is the same procedure, but on the other side of the valve body. http://www.hevanet.com/patbob/MercedesK1SpringKit/SpringKitInstall.html If you're still interested, check out some of my earlier posts for more threads about the kit. There have been several success stories, and a few disappointments. Last edited by theo3000; 05-19-2008 at 10:49 PM. |

I agree if you have a worn out transmission this is not the magical fix , in my case the transmission only has 85K .
It really is a easy job if your just changing out the K1 & K2 springs . The job took me under 1 1/2 hour complete ... As others have posted all you need is a nice right angle screwdriver and your in business . K-1 remove the front plate and remove the complete spring train and insert the purple spring put the green plastic spring holder back in and bolt the plate up and its done . K-2 is directlly to the rear of K-1 , same thing , remove the spring train and insert the pink spring and put the blue spring holder back in and put the plate back one . Becareful not to over tighten the 4 screws ... snug but don't over do it . Heres a few picks of the complete spring trains I removed . greg

I found the instructions to be lacking, one was a photocopy of a photocopy w/ writing on it, almost indecipherable, theres a thread here called something like 'ru ro raggy lost the little balls' which talks about a serious valve body mishap in relation to hazy directions.

The instructions can be confusing , some people don't have any mechcanical skills and that could be a problem ! I know people that can not even change there own oil . If I knew better I would have be a doctor or lawyer and not know how to do this stuff ...I'm working on making lots of dough , but for now I need to fix my stuff ...especially with the price of things these days .
It is a entry level job for a guy who can change his own transmission fluid . greg

I have significant flare between 3-4, all other shifting is good. Which springs should I replace? I bought a K1 kit which I have not installed yet, but that seems to be more for the 2-3 flare if I understand correctly? So doe the K2 spring improve the 3-4 flare?

K2 = 3-4 It sounds like the Superior kit will help you. My K2 spring was broken into 4 seperate pieces, so I know about 3-4 flare. |

I'm probably going to sound stupid, but can somebody please explain to me what "flaring" is? How does the car and transmisison act when it flares? I've seen this topic many times but still don't understand what it is.
