hello
this is probably a silly question but how do you know when to drain the water from a BF7591-D (with a drain)? I have seen other filters with water separators that are clear on the bottom. so i guess one could see if the water needs to be drained. i have a BF7591-D (with a drain) and thread adapter in route to me to install on my 78' 300d. anyway any feedback would be appreciated. matt |

Just crack open the drain whenever you check the oil. If water comes out, you needed to drain it.
Good luck. I've been very happy with my fuel filter mod.

As mentioned about draining out the Water.
My experience with canister filters with drains on them is that if your performance falls off or even if the engine dies from fuel starvation due to a plugged filter. Draining out the Filter and re-priming it often means the Engine will run again eve if it is only a few miles down the Road. That could be enough to get you off of a free way and so on. I think draining the filter allows some of the crap on the outside of the filter element to fall off.

hello
finally did this mod with the BF7591-D let the car idle for a good long time in the garage (car was blocked from driving) let it set overnight and the removed the drain plug. there was a steady stream of fluid coming out. question(s) will only water drain? do you basically let it drain until it does not drain anymore? thank you again |

If you fuel has water in it depends on where you are and the temp and the places you get fuel from. Somewhere in this thread I removed my filter I think it was after 2 years and there was about a tsp of water in the bottom (there was no drain in the filer I used). If you're not finding water don't be disappointed. It is a good thing to get uncontaminated fuel. Note that I have seen filters that have gotten plugged up and stopped the engine and if you drained the filter and reprimed them with the hand primer enough of the crap fell off of the filter element that it got you a bit further down the road where you had to repeat the draining again until you got someplace to get a new filter or fixed the contamination issue.

Diesel911,
thanks for the reply, hmm, so i don't drive my diesel a lot, or any of my vehicles.(3 cars and 2 motorcycles) so i may fill up 2x a year. so in humid Austin summers and lack of driving i probably get more water from the atmosphere than the fuel station? i assumed incorrectly that anything that drained from the filter would be water and now am trying to figure out how to distinguish water vs diesel when opening the filter drain. wondering now if i need a different filter where i can see what needs to be drained off? appreciate the feedback |

Also, in order for liquid water to get into the fuel injection system it has to build up high enough in the filter to do that. That means you would need more than a liquid cup of water inside of the filter to do that. That is a lot of water, and you are more likely to get that from contaminated fuel compared to condensation. Anway the new filter filters out smaller particles so you will always benefit from that.
