Yeah, that's Ulf Bossel's work. I know him and see him at FCS every year.

There are holes that can be shot into every one of these analyses.

For us, we compare against IC engines for various hotel loads on ships and APU applications. Our JP-5 to power out systems can run approximately 40% LHV basis, and our simple compact JP-8 fired APUs are roughly 30%. Despite the hype, there are no real advanced diesels that can make this without significant airflow and noise penalties, and gas turbines that could approach these numbers are vaporware (using pulse detonation and recuperators that are not practical for longevity). Small DC-rated diesel APUs are super-poor for efficiency too.

Granted we are working in a paradigm that is different from most, but the liquid fuel infrastructure is what must be leveraged for fast adoptation of the technology. Being tethered to the grand challenge of hydrogen storage is a major hassle.

FCs are not the best thing for all. For autos, the jury is still out.

I watched a report on DW-TV a few months ago and they mentioned that if a lot of the testing thats going on there works out that the Icelandic government will back the construction of hydrogen producing plants that will be powered with geothermal energy. It might not be enough for the whole world, but at least its a start.
I was wathing PBS a few days ago. The US actually, has a Super Volcano in the lower 48. Yellowstone and its region sits on a massive volcano. So we do have geothermal power to be used. Hawaii would aslo have enough geothermal power. Probably Japan, too.
I've seen some news items on solar pants being built in Nevada. Its more like steam driven turbines, that the water/steam heat is gernerated from the sun. I think one is in operation.
I think the Chevy Volt will be a winner. Also, diesel is alge oil pans out. I wouldn't rule out E85 either. If/when the celluose process is commercially viable, then it won't take away from food crops.

Shhh. Don't let everyone know. Those poor souls will have to go back to gasoline, which means more biodiesel for us.

Try convincing anyone to allow drilling on a national treasure.

OK, we can start with Congress. They're full of hot air. Of course any politician will do.

One of the unfortunate side effects of this sudden increase in gas prices and all of this awareness of renewable energy is that people are "jumping on the bandwagon". They all want a fast response in order to relax the price of fuel when in reality, these things take years of R&D and then even more time to implement them.

Renewable energy:Just another area where Europe is years ahead of the U.S.

Yep, nothing we can do for years. But if we got the speculators to dump oil the price per barrel would probably come down $30, that would help. Thats really the only thing that can be done in the short term.
