trip meter\odometer problem...Help, please!

OK, I'm in the process of selling my daughters' 82 240D, and today I drove 45 miles to let a few people from St. Louis check it out. Up till now, everything on the dash works fine(Speedo, odo and trip). It has 196,308 last time I checked it when I got to the Home Depot parking lot. I rode as one guy test drove it. Nothing bad, just a test drive. Next guy, same thing. But about 5 minutes into the drive, they guy notices the odomotors' not moving. The trip still has 49.9 from the trip up there and the first test drive. We hit the trip and it clears back to 0, then goes up to .9 and stops. As long as it's turning, the odo is working, but it keeps stopping at .9, and the odo stops when it stops. Clear it, it starts again, till it gets back to .9(?) What the heck is going on?? I advertised this, with pride, that everything works, then it screws up on the first looker. The second guy probably would have bought it, but he felt "uncomfortable" with the idea that is was supposed to be working, as in, i might be lying about the actual mileage. Ouch!

Check out the Dieselgiant site. But, you don't need to take absolutely everything apart. Once you get the shaft pulled out 1/2 inch, you can bite down on it with a needle-nose vice grip, then slide it back together. As long as the gear doesn't slip on the shaft, you're good to go.

How to Repair Your Broken Odometer:

http://dieselgiant.com/repairyourodometer.htm

This is an extremely common problem on these cars. Between my three Benzes, I've had four broken odometers.

Thanks for the quick replies, guys! I'll check these sites out right now. So, I'm assuming there's a gear between the two (trip\odo) that keeps the odo from moving when the trip stops. No brainer. But, what might be the cause of the trip suddenly starting to stick at .9? Could this guy have done something while I was talking to the next prospective buyer that would do this? I mean, this is just too weird that all of a sudden when some stranger is checking out the car that it just quits working.

Just a fluke it stopped when you were selling the car, stopping on "9" is the classic way it dies. Your going to have to do the "odo fix" as described above, happens to most of us.

check out Odometer repair no longer working :-(

At .9 its about to roll over another number drum. The combined weight of both drums revolving causes the intermediate gear to slip on the shaft! Years ago I moved the little gear over, dabbed some super glue on the serrated shaft and slid the gear back in place. Viola, worked ever since. What causes it, age and someone resetting the trip meter while the cars moving.
