617 non turbo head bolt reuse?

Does anyone have the Head bolt length specification for a 617 nonturbo? These bolts have been retorqued twice in their lives. Has anyone reused these bolts more than three times?

If I measure them and find them to spec. I don't have any problem with reusing them, but my Haynes manual doesn't have bolt length specs, or at least I can't find them.

Thanks and have a great day,

The head bolt spec length is in the OM615/616/617 engine manual. I have the manual but its at home, if nobody responds today I'll look them up tonight and send you them tomorrow.

I recently rebuilt an 81 OM616 engine and ALL of the longest head bolts (the ones that hold the cam pedestals) were out of spec. As I recall the spec for these bolts was something like 140mm. I do not know how many times the head had been off prior to my rebuild.

Incidently I did replace the six bolts that were out of spec and I found that the new headbolts felt totally different when I applied the final two torque sequences - it seemed I could feel the new bolts stretching as opposed to the old bolts which seems to require more effort to produce the 90 degree torque angle spec.

Stretch spec for the 12mm diameter, 12-point socket-head cylinder head bolts are:

104mm new 105.5mm maximum
119mm new 120.5mm maximum
144mm new 145mm maximum

MB recommends using the same style head bolt the engine was originally assembled with - do not mix 12-point socket head cylinder bolts with hexagon head cylinder bolts.

You should note that MB replaced the old style bolt beginning in Feb. 1979 with a waisted shank (slightly smaller in diameter) and the old style had a straight (or cylindrical) shank.

The 12-point socket head cylinder bolts do not need to be re-torqued after the first 500-1,000 km after rebuild and also have improved washers that are harder.

Also, the cylinder head bolts with a hexagon socket can be used with all cylinder head gaskets. The 12-point socket head bolts can only use the new head gasket with improved impregnation, part number 617 016 05 20 that is stamped on the gasket between cylinder's #1 and #2 for the 617 engine.

Tom,

Thanks for the measurements, but my head bolts are different lengths than these. Mine are along the lines of 116mm and 130mm.

Thanks,

The info came from the official MB shop manual, 1991 Ed., for the 615, 616, and 617 diesel engines. I see that your post about piston and prechambers refers to a 1981 300D non-turbo engine and the info I provided for you is for 1977 and earlier engines. Thus, my info will not help you. Perhaps another member has this info or your local MB dealer's parts dept can help.

Larry Do you not have the engine manual ? I would be glad to loan you mine for the duration of your project. E-Mail me offline if you want it.

Paul,

Thanks very much for the offer. All I really need at this point is the various lengths, both original and maximum lengths for the three different length head bolts on the '81 300D engine.

Thanks and have a great day,
