PS pump pulley removal

I have my PS pump out, and I am ready to pull off the pulley (I rented powerbuilt puller).

But, I can't figure out how to get the nut off of the end. This is the nut you use to crank the engine by hand. I tried to lock some vice grips to the flange and push against that, but I can't get the nut to budge!

How have others here done this in the past?

thanks in advance

zeke

You'll probably have to use an impact wrench. Maybe some other people with have some other ideas.

Take it to an AutoZone, they'll impact wrench it off for free. Had to do the same thing when I upgraded my alternator.

Even though I have an air compressor and several pneumatic Impact Wrenches I am a fan of this type of impact wrench that is made for changing tires (and use it more often then the pneumatic ones). The 4 that I have came from Harbor Freight and sell for around $27; on sale for around $19.
It is 12 volt and clips on to the battery our uses your car cigarette lighter. Besides the fact that it can be used as a regular Impact Wrench it make tire rotation fast; easily paying for itself with convince and usefulness. In the pic I used it to snatch the alternator shaft nut off.

@Diesel911 - Thanks - I will put one of those on my list.

@Scott and 300SD81 - do I need to have them impact wrench it back on when I am finished?

Thanks for the speedy reply!

Thanks everyone! Pep Boys was able to do it.

Too bad I still need a pulley remover (the rental unit jaws are too thick). I'm not going to grind them down, instead I will order a proper one from Samstag Tools.

You would think so but the way it creates the impact is different than an air impact. When you squeeze the trigger on the electric one you hear it spining and building up speed before it impacts. It uses inertia to create the impacting force. When it dose impact it is sharper and quicker than an air impact. Also you do not feel the torque so much with it. It raps on things very sharply.
I manage to remove a crank dampner bolt that was supposed to be torqued to 350 foot pounds with it. When I tried to use the air impact the whole Crankshaft wanted to turn I believe due to the fact that it creats a lot of torque. I tried the electric impact and it took a lot of rapping but the bolt came loose.
It is like any tool it has it limitations and advantages.
Where I worked the had an electic impact AC current that plugged into a wall socket. I did not like that one at all.

Putting the nut back on is the same problem. You could do like I did with that alternator. I put 2 dops of blue Loctite on the shaft threads and tightened the nut with the impact. The only other way I know to hold the pulley without a special tool for the job is one of the members uses a fan belt somehow like a strap wrench to hold the pulley. I cannot remember his member name but his Avitar has alot of electric fans on it.

Ok, next step - the pulley is off (thanks to a local indy )
Now how have people gone about removing the radial seal without the special tool mentioned in FSM?

This the a ZF pump

If I bend a paper clip into a little hook will I be able to yank it out?

There is little chance that a paper clip will work as the outer part of the seal has a tight fit to the bore in the Pump.
If you plan to take apart the complete pump wait until the Pump Drive Shaft is removed until trying to remove the seal.
Ounce the shaft is out it is 1,000 times easier to remove the seal. with the shaft out you can try putting a large blade screw driver blade under the seal lip and levering it out similar to opening a paint can.
If that dose not work for some where in the $6-$10 range you can get a hook type seal removing tool as seen in the Ebay ad. I the lower corner of the ad pic it shows you how to use it.

Thanks everyone, the PS pump seal is replaced and back in the wagon. It appears the leak is gone, though time will tell.......
