Is the Mobil 5/20 Synthetic straight motor oil or an ATF? My wagon is up and running with the new 5 speed. It's making some noises, I'm hoping I damaged the carrier bearing on the install and I'm going to try that. BUT I have synthetic Mobil ATF in there, maybe the 5/20 will help...

I used to run Amsoil synthetic ATF then Red Line MTL which are both fine for MB manual trannys but when they get a few miles on them the slightly heavier motor oil works better, epically the fivers with the "rattle". Whats up with your carrier bearing?

Great to know about the heavier oil.

Well I'm not 100% sure just yet but a MB friend who knows much more about them than I (he used to own VW Man shop in Minneapolis) came over last weekend and drove my wagon. It has a constant raspy sound and vibrations at higher speeds. He said he was pretty confident it was the carrier bearing and I probably messed it up banging it on. Or it was something else in the driveline, not the transmission which is good news.

I'm going to bring it to an indy next week and see if he can tell what's going on.
