BELIEVE me, that cargo area will handle WAAAAAAY more than 1000lbs. I loaded it up from front to back with TONS of computer equipment, and electronics, the UPS I put in was nearly 1000lbs by itself, and there was lots more in the car. the bumper was dragging when I finished loading it up, but when I started the car... up it went to full height!
that little 5cyl non turbo just pulled away! no issues. extra stopping distance was important, as hitting the brakes was interesting. smooth stopping, but not nearly what it is empty!

Sounds like a good idea, nice to see these wagons used as utility vehicles occasionally. They can take a beating for sure. Just as long as you will not be using a nice example, I say go for it!

I put a 6' long or so dresser in (3 drawers per side, 2 side) into the back to haul to goodwill. Did it behind my seat even. I have also moved washer / dryer and I be you could get a fridge in there.

I use mine for hauling construction material... my big complaint is that sheet goods (4'x8') do not fit inside. Otherwise, SLS is great for heavy loads.

Today we pickup up light fixtures and probably 500 pounds worth of tile from HD.
No reason that stuff wouldn't fit in a 300TD. Put the tile on the ground first and lay the lights up top since they are so light. Thats mostly what I will carry with it.

My work truck for 3 years.
I have loaded mine up w/ more crap than you can believe.most recently I put 56 ft of 6' high x 8' long fence panels on it, plus 4 10' 4x4's and 12 60lb bags of concrete mix. then the trailer had 11 8' 4x4's and 24' of fence panels. and the other 7 bags o cement.
I would have put more into the trailer, but the tire was deflating in a hurry. I have put over 1K lbs of tile, grout, thinset and backer. I routinely load the family in for a long weekend of camping. And I hit the scales @7880lbs gross w/ this load....

also- I have had fullsized trucks, mini trucks, minivans and a stepvan for work vehicles. I like wagons best. (well- a stepvan is cool, but parking sucks)I like my mercedes THE BEST. SLS rules.
sure- I get weird looks from other tradesmen on the job, until they see me roll out my portable table saw, sliding compound miter, planer, air compressor, work table, saw horses, step ladder, and piles of hand tools. and I can say- "well, at least it's a diesel. and I dont have monthly paymments." add a hitch and you can haul the dirty stuff- demo, brush, soil, sand, etc in a small trailer. with a wagon you can load stuff in from the rear side doors, too- w/ a truck+ topper, you DO have to crawl in there to get stuff situated. I have an enclosed 5x8 trailer that my wagon tows just fine even fully loaded w/ tools and materials. If you occasionally need a 3/4 ton truck, HD, Lowes, menards rent them for like $20 long enough to get your merchandise home or whatever.

I have been watching that one since it was listed. it looks like a decent deal. I have some wagon experience, if you win it and need a hand let me know.

Sorry Mobetta, that just seems like to much weight.
I don't think the wagon can totally replace a pickup. Sounds to me like is just something you'll have to try out. If it doesn't work out, then you can always sell it. I've got an 84 in the classifieds section but it will need some MIG welding work. Just because you can get more than 1000 lbs in the wagon and drive the car doesn't mean that its a safe thing to do, or good for the unibodied rig.

I have the tie down holds in mine and used them when hauling around the old 560 engine I replaced in the SEL. I've had a load of a bunch of converters, about 7 wheels and about 20 big MB batteries that made it sag and imediatly pumped back up to level when I started it. Since the interior of mine is pretty worn, I have no worries about using it to haul stuff. The engine made the floor panel sag a bit but it all came back.
