Your average car in Portugal is quite small.....when people see that S coming they definitely get out of the way

Your car doesn't seem to have the headlight wiper system like my car does... Very nice condition though... Compliments to you.

Keep you eye on the oil. you might have to upgrade to 15w40. If you're car is using a bit more oil, it's possible you just have a head gasket problem. The gasket tends to break inbetween the chain case and the #1 cylinder. It's a simple fix and cheap as compared to a new engine, especially if you can replace the gasket yourself.

Thanks.
The car is using 10w40.
The oil consumption is about 1 quart for each 1700 miles.
Is that too bad?
I don't know if the head gasket is ok, but the coolant doesn't disappear, even after 5000 miles...
Can the oil consumption be the only visible sign?

Best regards

Actually, on these engnies oil usage is usually a sign of bent connecting rods

I know that.
But at least here in Europe that is not common.
There are lots of these engines with many miles that never bent a rod.
People don't know that problem, too, because I really don't remeber that happening in any of these engines around here.
The most common failure is a problem in the head gasket or crack in the engine head due to overheating. But that isn't also very common, too.

So, I don't think that the engine has a bent rod. It runs very well; I did more than 2300 km in two days without any problem...
I think that the oil consumption may be the normal for an engine with 350000 km... And it isn't increasing with the time, wich I think that didn't happen if a rod was bent...

At least I hope that...

I hope so too! That oil usage isn't extreme either, I'd drive more and worry less personally

Its possible that because you car is such a "late" 350 (we got them in 1990 and the last few came in a 1995s) that it has good rods from the factory. Do you know when they started offering diesel W140s?

In Europe w140 diesel's started in 1992 with the name 300 SD.
Then, in late 1993 the name changed: S350 Turbodiesel.
In the beggining of 1994 there was a restyling and they stop selling in 1996 when the S300 Turbodiesel (with 177 hp) was introduced
I think that the S300 Turbodiesel doesn't exist in the U.S.A.

And now in the winter the engine temperature is always constant at 80 degrees I think that this car doesn't like hot weather
The oil consumption isn't increasing with time, so I think that it doesn't have any problems with bent rods.

Anyway, I still didn't find the engine number
I don't really know if the engine is the original or if it was replaced. However, I think that it is the original. But I would like to confirm...

Best regards

Do you know if there are other Mercedes (for example w124 ?) that have the same differential of the w140 S350 TD?

There is a noise in the differential almost only at a speed between 48 and 57 miles. After 58 miles/hour the noise disappears...
But I would like to repair it. The problem is that it is not easy to find a used differential for this car, because they are rare... And a new one would be very expensive

Thanks; Best regards

Check with jim16671836. He had some 92 300SD parts listed in the parts forum a few months ago.
