Like the amateur I am, I snapped that little plastic stick that protrudes at the base of the wooden shift surround. Its function is to align the wooden surround piece and keep it flush. Of course, now my piece of trim sits up and floats over the console and I truly feel like a moron. It's actually making me feel depressed on some level. This was one of the nicer, unmolested parts of the car.

What have others done to fix this?

If you're lucky, and persistant, you may find one in a junk yard. To remove correctly: remove ashtray, remove 2 screws on bracket in ashtray housing and remove, SLIDE shift console back.

Don't Chrome them; polish them

Thanks for the directions. I won't make that mistake again. The wood is good on mine, so I was hoping to repair that little plastic piece somehow.

I've repaired the plastic "stick" with superglue and I've seen a couple that were drilled out and had a longer similar sized bolt put in place place. Good Luck.

Ugly, beat-up, faded ,whatever. As long as the plastic piece is intact, you're good to go. Remove the three staples with a small flat blade screwdriver. Take a razor and slide it up under the plastic to release the glue bond between the wood and plastic. Slide it out. Do the same on your good piece and be careful not to snap off the little channels in the wood into which the plastic slides. Now, just put a few dabs of superglue, or glue of your choice, onto the wood and plastic and slide it up in there. Looks factory assembled minus the staples.

I did this a few weeks ago and couldn't be happier with the result. Cost? Tree fiddy to the salvage yard and about thirty minutes of tedious work.
