bumped to today

it has been discussed, and tried- seems to depend on the type of boot.

a quick search netted 11 results

I have not. No need to yet. Based on the time it takes, I'll just replace the half shaft when the need arises.

Funny, I was just looking at that video last night! I need to do 2 boots immediately, and another 2 on the white wagon don't appear too long for this world.
I guess I will go with the Astoria flexx boots, just don't know whether to use the 3000 for cars or the 3001 for light trucks. And I'm not too sure how to secure/clamp them, and what to use for that.
I don't think the strap pliers/tools are too expensive, just not sure if that is the best route to go.
I'm hoping for allot of help from Dan on this one, but he went and installed used boots on his cheap wagon so it isn't an emergency situation for him anymore.
Thoughts on the proper weight of the gear oil/grease?
Anybody want to hold my hand during this?

I did this successfully. You will need the Dorman boots, dont remember the part number off hand but do a search and you find it in one of my old posts. Just make sure you buy a decent transmission funnel and cut the big end down to the same diamter as the joint. Also the only lubricant that worked for me was differential fluid. Nothing else worked, the boot would get stuck and tear. I did this all in my garage at home. It was a pretty straight forward job. Bench vise helps alot also!

No problem Jimmy.

I'd suggest using the Astoria FB3001 with the recommended cone or funnel. Make sure the funnel has no sharp edges. Trim to make smooth.
Astoria recommended using "Pledge" as a cone lubricant.

I'd use moly CV grease in the jiont rather than the "spider oil" the FSM suggest. Astoria uses moly cv grease and says they do not know how well the boot will hold up to oil. I assume that the original oil is the same as 90wt diff oil by looking and smelling what came from the ones I've torn open.

One thing to note is the MB CV joint requires much more grease due to the volume of the metal can plus the boot.

I believe retail on the FB3001 is around $25. I ask Astoria about a Mshop group buy for these boots. He stated if we looked to purchase around 10K we could talk. They can be found online for as low as $16 each.

I'd be willing to order a few if locals want to have a mb axle re-boot gtg. I think Jimmy said he will provide the food.;)

That Dorman CV boot installation tool is starting to sound like a good deal at $150 bucks. Appears to do the same exact thing as the Astoria flexx gun, but at almost half the price.

I'm torn between buying that gun and doing my own vs having them done locally for $80 bucks apiece. Looks like it would be downright easy with the gun.
I'm guessing the Dorman gun could be used with the Astoria boots. I could have a CV party at some point. Been wanting to have an informal GTG over here anyway. But we'd have to order pizza or cook burgers. I don't do much else, and the wife ain't exactly into this "thing"......:mad: {She's no Tab, Joy, Tracy, Sunny, etc.....}

Hey Jimmy! I could bring Joy to keep trudy company...

Make sure it will open up far enough. I recall reading that one of the less expensive guns would not work with the large MB cv joint.
