it lives!

It is with GREAT THANKS AND APPRECIATION to those of you who contributed to this thread that I tell you: IT LIVES!!!!!!!!!!

JT20 came by on MLK day and we spent a "day of service" servicing the wagon. After some....um....confusion we turned the cam sprocket around 180º and corrected the relation of it with regard to the chain/crank/camshaft. Pleased to report a good result on fuel start of delivery/timing.

This afternoon I was able to button everything back up and get her started!
(Cheers. Applause. Hooting.)

With some weirdness, though: (would you expect anything less?)

Starter: First turning the ignition, she acted as if the battery was dead (which I new wasn't the case). After checking the terminals and whatnot, and clicking the key back and forth many times, she lept to life. I was so excited (and nervous) I couldn't quite place what the "hum" was I was hearing from the rear of the motor. Upon eventually turning the vehicle off, it continued to "run on," so I shut her down w/ the fuel kill lever, only to hear that the starter motor was still goin'. I quickly disconnected the battery ground, the starter stopped, and I realized what that durned "hum" was.

Placing the ground back on the battery, the starter would immediately spark to life, so I got under the car and futzed with the wires...which seemed to solve the problem...for no apparent reason.
I started her back up and let her idle til warm (minus the "hum"), though when I eventually killed the key, she continued to "run on," (though at a less vigorous/healthy pace). Turning the KEY back "On" would immediately bring back the more vigorous/healthy pace.
Anyway, again, I killed her via the fuel lever, and the starter was silent.
Upon later inspection of the starter/solenoid area, I noticed that the little bolt that goes all the way through the "mounting neck" (area between the starter + solenoid) was hanging loose (halfway out) and had no nut on the end of it (though I've never messed w/ this bolt in my life.)

Q: What the heck is that bolt for?
Q: What the heck is going on with this "run on"? My vacuum system has never had issues, and I've checked + doublechecked the vacuum hoses under the hood.

Other things that are bothering me are:
* I hear an occassional "knocking" at idle...best duplicated I guess by the "clucking" you can do with your tongue.
* I could have sworn that way back when I first got into this I drained all the coolant from the vehicle (I even installed a block heater). However, she only took 7 quarts during my refill today. The heater in the car is working, the upper radiator hose is kinda luke-ish warm, and she hovers at 80º. Hmm.

Hope everyone had great holidays, and, a belated "Happy 2009" to ya.

congratulations, Lee.

We should have read our own instructions, they weren't that far off. I added information in bold print to the procedure.

that 'clunking' sounds like nailing. How were the injectors stored?

did the shop install the Prechambers or you?

i think

i'm attaching a diagram highlighting that bolt that came outta the starter...unless someone has ideas otherwise, i think i'll have to remove the starter to replace it...it seems to hold something that in place that i need to see up close and personal to get right. looks like i need to go buy a 10mm hex for my socket wrench and see how this starter gets removed. crud.

found that the vacuum line to the tranny was disconnected down there. maybe that's why she continued to run after shutoff?

the sound when running was a sort of "knock" that seemed to occur only at ide. the injectors were just stored sittin' in a box...didn't even occur to me that the residual diesel might gum 'em up. they were pretty darned near new injectors, too. what now? a can of diesel injector cleaner"
