You can check to see if the oil cooler getting oil flow or not. After a good highway drive, open the hood and feel the top of the oil cooler. If it is hot, oil is flowing through it.

Ok, drove it 10 miles on the highway (60 mph).
I did notice that after getting off the highway, the oil pressure at idle was back to its usual level (~1.8 bar). I checked the oil cooler (this is the long, rectangular mini-radiator next to the radiator, correct?) It was just barely warm (maybe 120 degrees F, as a guess...about the same as the radiator hose). Nothing like the valve cover (too hot to keep a hand on long). I then drove a few miles, in case the cooler had just started functioning, but it remained the same temperature. Is it supposed to get hot like the engine, or warm like the radiator hose?

Flow to oil cooler
I'll chime in here just because I have recent experience with my '81 non-turbo 617. After I replaced my oil lines about 3 months ago I kept popping the hood and checking the temperature of the fittings and cooler. Even after a 3-hour highway run at 75-80MPH in the worst heat of July I never felt hot oil going to my cooler, indicating the oil thermostat wasn't opening. Either my T-stat is defective or the oil just wasn't reaching a high enough temperature to open it.
Maybe the oil cooler is really only needed for towing a camper across the Saraha?

watch your engine temp closely. I have noticed that my oil pressure only drops when I go above 80*
often, driving around town will not warm the engine sufficiently to drop the pressure. high oil pressure is better than low pressure as long as it responds to throttle. |

Ok, I'll treat this as a "bears watching, but no action" item. This is my first year with the car but the only time it got a bit over 80 was during a really hot day when I had the air on max.

To put all doubt to rest about engine/oil tempuratures, use an Infra-Red temp. sensor. Just point the red dot at what ever area you want to check. can be set to C or F temp readings.
I thought I was having high temps with my new engine, changed the temp sensor/ t-stat, temp gauge in dash. then bought a Sears Infra-Red and put all fears to rest. The coolant radiator and the oil cooler radiator both work the same way, they both have a thermostat. the oil cooler has the T-stat in the bottom of the filter housing. It is a wax pellet type T-stat. Charlie

The oil cooler on my car get hot like the upper radiator hose.
