Just the carbon alone scares me. I can't imagine that not caking things up over time. I haven't tried it over a long haul but I have run some cleaned engine oil mixed with diesel. It works fine for that. I make sure its clean first of course.

I ran out of fuel once also after cleaning my tank and the sender unit messed up. I dumped whatever I had in the tank (trans fluid, oil, etc). It got me to a gas station. The car ran great and didn't smoke at all. But... that doesn't mean it was good for the car.

Just to clarify I don't think it is good for the car at all. Running it long term would probably cause insane coking of everything. Its just kind of convenient to pour it in there instead of hauling it around in your trunk, risking it spilling (happened to me once) and taking it in there and signing for it. I just let it settle for a day, grab a funnel, put a piece of rag in it to catch big stuff and pour it in. Plus, its fuel. The way I look at it its getting a good discount on my motor oil

I doubt thats any better than the 10 micron stock filter.

$4 will buy me a few Tall Boys of the cheap stuff at the local convenience store

You guys bicker too much....

As for my contribution to this whole debate...

Are you 100% sure that the fuel you get from the fuel station is 100% free of small particles that the system cannot filter?

While there may be less particulate crap in the purchased fuel versus used oil, running it every so often is not going to destroy the engine...

How do you know? Why needlessly put the engine at risk when its so easy to properly recycle the oil?

One tiny particle making its way through an injector at such high pressure or getting dragged through the cylinder by the piston could do huuuge damage. Why risk it? I recycle my oil properly.

No, that is why I took steps to go down to a 2 micron fuel filter... Much better then the 10 micron stock.

Yeah I run grease.... But metal laden used motor oil or transmission oil is where I don't cross that line. Too risky..

I run hydraulic oil in my benz, it is very clean to start then it is filtered down to 2 mic before it hits my tank.

I run used motor oil and trans fluid thru my Ford, but not the benz. It is also filtered with the same setup. I also let mine sit and settle for months before its used. I can get junk yard pumps for less than $20 and a set of injectors for it for less than $200. I only paid $500 for the truck so economically speaking the oil I burn has already paid for the whole truck if I screw it up. I am a bit pickier about the fuel in the benz.

I have burned about 50 gallons of used oil thru the truck and a couple hundred gallons of hydraulic. Probably ran over 100 gallons of hydraulic thru the benz. Noticed no degradation on either. Less smoke in the truck when I am running oil. Smells like a worn out gasser. just my experience with it. Still have not clogged one filter on either also, so my filter setup must work decent.

My boss calls my truck the garbage disposal.

Diesel Fuel is already filtered when it comes from the pump. However, I can remember back in the 70s when that was not the case at most stations and we did got a lot of vehicles where I worked with fuel contamination. Mostly rust and water.

I know in this case it ruined the injectors; a repeat of my post:

At one of my past jobs one of the Big Wigs in the fruit company Dole (who we had contract with) thought they could mix used Crankcase oil in their Refer Gen Set fuel. The result was a lot of plugged up injectors.
Crankcase oil has detergents, antirust chemicals and Sulfuric Acid (Sulfur content in the Oil + water from the air) and who know what else in it. Stuff that is not supposed to or even inhibit burning.
If you could distill out the crap and leave only Oil it would be safe to mix with Diesel Fuel.

Rough ride. Smokes too.

I ran 4 gallons of waste motor oil in with my 45 gallon grease filtration system. Ran a week or so. Clogged VegfFilters and exess smoke. My 1984 Mercedes 300D didnt seem to like it. I purged/pumped out/purged again and pumped everything out of the second tank. Emptied my grease filtration system too. It set me back about a month in grease production and a 1/4 tank of Dino. Cars greasefilter has also been changed and the car is back to normal, again. Not gonna do that again.

I have seen companies settle there waste motor oil and reuse it again.

done it

I have an 82 300 sd and I have run it on the engine oil
before a few times. It really smokes bad when you do it
and it really cloggs up your spin on filter. I cut my spin
on filter apart and looked at it and it was bad.

The oil from the mercedes diesel changes by accumilating
soot and that is what messes up your filter. I dont think oil from a gas engine is as bad.

Vegitable oil is a dream compared to the motor oil...
Vegitable oil will cure a smoking diesel.... If you diesel is old and smoking them try veggie oil

I use used motor oil from gasoline cars after a quick filter and run it in my car with NO problems. Mixing it with veggie is not a good idea because of the viscosity(it changes). And i have known alot of veggie heads that have poor systems but because the car runs and drives they dont seem to mind.

IMHO If the source for the used motor oil is safe and your system is NORMAL and you filter it then you should have no problem running it other then less mpg but when free that doesnt seem to be a big factor.
