The AC works fine - it just needs to be recharged every 6-8 weeks. The leak is in the A/C line. The mechanic is replacing the calipers and master cylinder today. I'm going to have him inspect the front suspension on her. No rust anywhere.

Honestly though - I'm kinda tired of hearing the rave reviews on ebay and craigslist regarding the fuel mileage in these cars. What can I expect on highway driving 60-70mph out of this car? I'm assuming I can at least hit the 26 MPG mark but would love to hear some truthful testimony about 30+

P.S. - It'll be a very cold day in hell before I ever own, title or register in my name a mini-van diesel or not.

These are great cars, but if you can't do a lot of work yourself, they are very expensive. Make sure everything works. Your A/C leak could turn out to be a major repair if it's leaking oil too; this is a 22 year old car, it probably needs all of the o-rings replaced to seal it properly. The sunroof is a nice feature, but finding someone who can repair it can be a problem. Mileage will be less than 30 on the highway. This is a heavy car - it won't really do much better than a similar gas powered car on the highway, but will do significantly better in town.

Besides, the new #22 head on it was worth what I paid for the car.
They have the advantage of no rust in the southern states. Finding high quality bodies up in MI is a real challenge and they'll bring more money.

Ought to setup a business moving excellent bodies from down south to the north.........

While I was looking for a southern car, this one is from Washington state and shows no signs of oxidation at all. Metal or paint. I think it also had history in northern California. So no sun damage either.

When I got it, the odo showed 212k miles. I found out through carfax that it was turned back 100k.

When I'm done with it, I'll probably have $5500 into it and it will have basically and new interior, new engine, new tranny.

Thats EXACTLY what I was told when I purchased my 1987 Blk on Blk 300SDL. Were you shown WHICH line it was since they said it WAS JUST a line? Mine turnout out to be the dreaded evaporator behind the dash. Usually, if it's JUST a leak in a line, the line gets replaced as its a simple and relatively easy fix, especially with the cost of freon.

Enjoy, its my favorite color combo.

Pics? 603 SDL is creme of the crop man. I have 2 kids as well, maybe going to have a 3rd, was considering this for family of 5 (what can I say, MB diehard...).

I bought my 87D (same engine) with 239k as well. Very reliable car (now its got 280). '

Things Ive repl on engine -

-water pump
-fuel thermostat (pricey little plastic part, I think is kinda worthless here in the south)
-Upper rad hose
-serp belt, tensioner, spring
-oil pres sender (started leaking for some odd reason, never seen that before)
-AC recharge, high press switch
-new aux water pump
-rebuilt cruise amp

Thats about it man. Been very reliable, but there are those knock on wood things (like #14 head, so watch coolant temps!, vac pum - mine seems fine, timing chains - I should check stretch, sheesh, dripping front seal on trans - replace cardboard on garage floor every few months, suspension bushings in rear - dont know if its same on 126 but mine rides like your stadning up in a canoe at 80 mph).

Rock on. Post some pics, Im jealous.

Oh yeah, mines been fed a steady diet of clean defiltered WVO for over 2 yrs (30k miles) fed via nice 2 tank Frybrid system. Kinda sweet to stop in a gas station down here with all pumps closed, park go to use bathroom, leave them with a few drips of trans fluid and pee on the seat...

Don't these cars have a dreadfully expensive non-generic high pressure line?

All the lines are pretty pricey.

Any part that's SDL specific is scary expensive...cause they didn't make many..and MB is your only source.

Oh yeah - the kids love it, the get lost in the back seat, it'll work great even with an addition to the family.

How does that WVO system work out? We are curious about trying it out in one of ours - particularly with being down here in the South East and the "gas crisis", I'm kinda getting bored with the whole gas station thing.

Thanks for all of your advice as well. We'll be keeping this one at least for another 750,000 miles.

Looks very nice. I love the black interior!

As for WVO, its a great car for it. Id recommend a good 2 tank kit and a good filtering/dewater process. Jump on www.frybrid.com and start reading up. Ofcourse before you start with that, make sure the car runs well. I drove mine for a year working out the kinks before jumping in.
