Fuel Tanks...Interchangeable?

I asked this question in another thread, but I didn't get a response. I think it got lost in the shuffle.

I've got an '86 300SDL that I want to put a new fuel tank in. I'm finding tanks from other w126 models including gassers. What models had the same tank as my 300SDL?

Thanks.

Anyone? I've got lines on fuel tanks, but no idea if they will work. Are all 126 tanks created equal?

Thanks.

The tank is bolted on each side with wings. You should be OK with a Diesel tank. A gasser tank fuel lines may not match to the holes in the trunk floor. A 126 "L" is longer in the middle so you should be fine as long as you stick to a Diesel.
So why do you need a new tank?
Regards

Ok. Thanks for the info. Most of the tanks I'm finding are from gassers, but I do have a line on a 84 SD tank. Sounds like it will work just fine.

Here is the thread about why I need a new tank. Rusty Fuel Cap

I have a tank from a 116 300SD. I know the 116 tanks are a bit bigger than the 126 81-85 but not sure about the SDLs. If you find it will work and are interested pm me.

Good luck!

gone but NOT forgotten

Your thread has been buried, but I have not forgotten. Since I own a 300SDL, I was planning on driving it out to where the 300SD parts car sits and compare the tanks. Maybe I'll take my tape measure with me, too.

I have a extra Lg tank out of a 126SD that I thought would fit my 116Sd but it won't work. It's apx. 30(?)gals with sender, filler neck etc.. If you want. I'll bump it up under parts as I can't seem to re-post the pictures.

shucks! The w126 parts car is a gasser. Sorry. There is a 300SD in the boneyard though. Some of the boneyards punch holes in the tanks to drain --- hate it when they do that. I personally like to drain them and keep the "good" diesel.

You can also take the "new" tank to a good shop and have the holes welded if you can find a good deal on one.

I'm not sure in all cases but a few months ago, I replaced the tank in a 87 SDL with one from a 83 380SEL. It fit fine. I did change the tank screen because the one in the SDL was a little different inside the tank but the same outside. They both had the same lines, all the same size and was no problem at all.

EDIT: Oh, I did have to remove the tank restricter from the 83 tank but that wasn't a big deal.

Cool. Well if a gasser 126 tank can work, then I'm sure the diesel 126 tanks I'm looking at will be fine.
