time lapse video of replacing oil pan

The 1979 300SD which I just bought had a smashed oil pan. I replaced it and shot a time lapse video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXevJFVN8sY

The lighting is pretty bad (this is my first time lapse video), but you can see me remove the pan, chase the threads, then install the new pan. my favorite part is watching the oil drain at high speed.

I've worn safety goggles ever since I squirted brake fluid directly into my eye while rebuilding a brake system. I can distinctly recall screaming like a little girl while stumbling my way into the kitchen. that burning sensation was probably the single most terrifying moment of my life.

Great video, but such poor lighting at the point of attack. Still watched it and enjoyed it.
I did the brake cleaner to the eye a few months ago, and I just knew that pain and searing meant my cornea, iris and optic nerve were all melting!!!
Just an awful experience, and I am religious about eye protection from here on........
I can't wait for more time lapse videos. Very cool!

Haha I did that too. Took a shot of brakleen right into the right eye. I was real concerned as the pain was excruciating but after rinsing my eye was fine. Still don't where safety glasses though unless im drilling or grinding

I ALWAYS wear protective eye gear when working on my car. Comes as a habit from a past life running a carpentry business. Seems sort of funny when you first start wearing them, but becomes part of the habit of work. And, it's not so funny when you're not wearing them, and you get something in your eye (like, for instance, warm citric acid wash from your block...ask me how I know).

Should have used a cordless drill, it would have even gone faster.

I changed a fuel filter on a Nissan without depressurizing. Was looking right down the pipe when the hose came off. This was in the parking lot at the Pizza Slut I was working at. I ran through the parking lot like a wild man, completely blinded.

ditto on the drill. Most of the new ones have torque adjustments on them as well. Super efficient.

Wouldnt trust the torque adjustment, I set it on the lowest setting possible when doing stuff on the car. Real labor savor on any bolt intensive job, like the dash.

Also, in the vid he torques it incorrectly. Did the star treatment on the initial but not the final. With the oil pan I usually do more of a rotating cross than star.

I did this project last weekend and it took a few seconds longer for me to do it. It would appear that the PO didn't notice the nuts on two of the long screws and stripped them completely. So...no torque wrench?

...used as a precaution, it is very effective. Not as factory torque setting; always finish up manually.
