I wonder how common of an option rear headrests are on a W116. Both my 1979 300SDs have them.

Score! I just picked these up from a Euro W116 in the junkyard today.

Now I just hope rear headrest brackets from a '79 W116 fit in a '79 W123 with a '85 W123 rear seat spring set.

Any tips for re-skinning the cushions? I realized the 'rear' headrests I had are just front ones, so I need to put the blue covers from them on to these.

How will you mount them onto the rear seat? The mounting brackets are too short, the W123 needs a long bracket like in the first page that bolts to the upper and lower edge of the rear seat frame.

Qtip and rubbing alcohol works great, I did this on my 240D not long ago. Makes 'em much more readable at night.

Q tip and alcohol also worked great on the '83 to '85 right side electric mirror switch. Gets nasty through those years!

I have a cloth covered set I pulled off a 123 Euro about a year ago. I need to
go dig them out and install them so I can get into this exclusive club .

I just need to find a set of black covers.

Make sure you have the eyelets for the rear seatback. The elongated ones allow enough room to pull the headrests forward and up without pinching the upholstery.

From the bolt spacing in the first picture of this thread they look to be the same brackets. Maybe 5" between bolts, a triangle release switch and a spring.

No I meant if you were going to use the mounting brackets (where the rods slide into) onto the rear seat, I doubt it will be long enough to be of use. See, when I installed mine with new parts from the dealer, it came with one long mounting bracket (like the one that Deliveryvalve swapped from the rear seat of the junkyard unit).

Those front units already have a frame to mount to, but the rears don't, at least on a W123.

Didn't think it was that exclusive. My 84 300D has them too...heheh even still has all the original plasters and bandages in the med kit. I believe my buddy Bens Lover's wife's 300D also has them. I believe mine is not Euro 123 and neither is his. I like the look of them...although my children would never know the difference. I don't find that they obstruct the rear view much.

Here are some pics of the parts that I swapped over...

The additional seat back frame support needed to make to attach the bracket.

Bracket to hold headrest post.

Plastic upholstery eyelet molding.

Brackets as installed.

Speedometer correction

Just to update this thread. I adjusted my original speedometer to closely match the 2.88 gearset. I talk about it here in this thread.

Add another member to the rear headrest club! Mine came with them as well.

I see what you are talking about now. I will have to buy one from the dealer or cut one out of a donor seat.

How much was it from the dealer?

The kit was $60 at the dealer per side, and it includes one of the longer brackets as well as two of the mounting bits where the rods slide in to (one with a lock - with the triangle piece - and one without). The triangle piece uses the middle pleat between the headrest posts, as a button that you can press down to release the headrest. Similar to the hidden button on the back of the front seats, except that one is pressed forward (from the point of view of the car) while the rear headrest button, you push downward.
