Mercedes 1993 300d Timing

Hopefully someone has an answer. i have a 1993 300d that has a timing issue. i discovered that the cam is'nt timed perfectly with the crank. i know how to put the cam at tdc but i dont know how to put the crank at tdc. im afraid to purchase a book for the sole purpose that i dont think it will have it in there and then im out $60. Any info please respond

What makes you think it has a timing problem? Rough idle? Low power? Smoke?

The cam will never be timed perfectly with the crank. Because of chain wear, it will always be a few degrees behind except on a brand new engine.

with your cam marks lined up, and both lobes up on number one, look down at the crankshaft damper. You should see a series of numbers on the damper and a small pointer comming off the front cover. You may have to clean the schmutz off the damper pulley to find the scale. You'll see tdc or 0 on the scale. Like forced induction said.. depending on your mileage there will always be some slop. Chains do wear. It should be really close though. If you are over 150K, you may want to look into replacing it if it seems to be far off.

Usually the Haines manuals are cheaper then 60.00 and are written more for a lay person as opposed to the factory mechanic. Mercedes manuals are often written like stereo instructions. The older manuals were notorious for not having steps in them because the germans did not like writing same things over and over. You just had to refer to an earlier manual.

Thanks, i had the front cover off and found that the chain had jumped do to previous mechanic crapmanship. i was looking to see if there was another way besides the damper cause i removed it along with the cover that has the markings. thats not the issue anymore because i found that due to it being out of time, a valve is shot and now i need a new head. thanks for the help and if anyone has an engine or head forsale please contact
