I haven't dug in any further -- too bummed out to dig into it right now. I guess I'll need to determine the extent of the damage to see if it's worth trying to repair or if I should just snag that complete engine/trans and drop them in. The latter may make more sense given the relatively low cost and mileage.

Man, I would be bummed too!

I don't know though, if you can get a whole engine and trans for..what was it, around $1k? That would probably be close to what you'll have to pay to have whatever it is fixed, assuming it is compicated and you cannot do it yourself. The engine might need to come out of there anyway..
I won't jump to conclusions, though. Perhaps it is still something relatively minor.

I'm thinking the $1k engine is starting to sound like a bargain. I'd still have my old one for spare parts, too. We'll see... thanks for the reassurances!

BTW, there is an '87 300D for sale here in town. Low mileage (163K or so), but the rockers are starting to rot, and the guy's asking $3900. I just thought it was a bit odd to see a W124 diesel here, of all places!

WHen my car did that, it was just the head gasket. It was a pretty big job, but didn't cost a whole lot... gasket kit & misc hardware, plus a couple of tools if you don't already have them. No need to replace the bolts unless they are stretched beyond spec, which they usually are not.

Well, that's KINDA good news, Dave! Did yours knock, too? I am trying to figure out whether a head gasket would knock that noisily. I guess I am going to need to dig in deeper either way. Thanks!

Mine was making noises, but it was from the hydraulic lifters... some gasket debris plugged a couple of oil passages to the lifters, preventing oil flow, and making them tick-tick-tick pretty loud. I wasn't getting any bottom end noise though. The oil pressure gauge would fluctuate rapidly at idle. The oil blowing out the #1 hole means it's very likely you at least have a failed gasket. It will be hard to determine if there is any other damage without pulling the head, though. Photos of my 602 head replacement are at this URL:

Thanks for the reply... I will keep my fingers crossed that maybe a simple gasket job will get me back on the road. I suppose I ought to check my timing chain stretch while I'm at it.

Absolutely. And also adjust the IP timing before buttoning it back up.
