Is There a Way to Bypass The NSS?
So is there a way to bypass the Neutral Safety Switch on a W123. My shifter bushings are not the best and its causing problems starting the car. I use the put in neutral play with the stick until it starts method but its just getting annoying. So is there a way to bypass the switch.

Sure, you can bypass that switch. I wouldn't do it.

Why not just repalce the $2 bushing(s)?

X2. Other things can go wrong with bad shifter bushings. Mine were so bad that I had to keep holding the stick so it wouldn't flop around and go out of gear.

Underneath carpeted side panel by the gas pedal, there are 4 wires running to the transmission, Purple white, black and yellow (I dont remember exactly), all you need to do is Connect 2 of those, I did it when I swapped in a manual trans. But I dont remember which wires exactly.
If you search the manual trans conversion threads. you will find your answer.

Certainly it is as easy as shorting a pair of wires, at least on a W123. But it is not safe. It is much more dangerous to start an automatic while in gear than a manual.

When you start the car you're in the car and hopefully can avert disaster. You might move the shift lever to P , leave the car, and later discover the tranny was in R.

well in a pinch, you can jump across two of the screws under the black box on the inner fender near the battery.
I was having trouble every once in a while, nothing would happen when turning the key. so tried jumping the screws, and it started. finally replaced the NSS and all fixed. That was a couple yrs ago, and no problems since. Be sure trans is in park, parking brake on, turn key to glow plugs, jump screws, and Zoom Zoom . Be sure to check to see if you don`t have shifter bushings that need replacing. Charlie

Its not safe but its no more unsafe than a manual in gear. There is no NSS for the manuals.
Its the purple wires.

It is more unsafe because the car won't start to move until the engine actually starts, and then it can start with some force. With a manual, the car will start to jerk as soon as you engage the starter, but there won't be a lot of power.

I do not know about that one...If the manual is left in 1st or Reverse, I have seen starters that has enough torque to pull the manual tranny over a 2x4. Granted that was on a gasser, but either way...just replace the NSS.

Your gonna have to explain that one to me. Someone almost took out my carport with the car in gear, clutch out while starting while talking on the phone.
