What the he$% got rigged here and why?
So I am installing my radio and accessories today and I find the below pictured valve (?) behind the glove box. I start to wonder why it is spliced into the glove box light wire. I investigate further and looking up near the center dash vent that is supposed to be for the auto climate control I see the wires looked spliced. I feel for the connector on the climate control vent and nothing is there. This valve has a tube going up the pillar on the passenger side and there are two wires going up the pillar that look the same as the ones attached to the valve. I wonder if this is related to my other post with the strange hole in the headliner. So what it looks to me like is someone relocated the temp sensor to the roof. But why would anyone do this?

It is in the roof in a 126, IIRC.

That rear view mirror stem looks like that of a W123. That's the correct placement of the vent in a W126, but not a W123.

There appears to be a fan in that thing. Is that the interior air temperature sensor and aspirator fan?

On a side note: Does every 123 have that crap around the edge of the rearview mirror? I had to scrape it off both of mine when I bought them.

Yeah, I thought that's what it is. The odd thing is it's clearly rigged by someone, as the power is spliced out of the glove box light using wire taps and I still have the vent in the dash but it's disconnected

What model?
I have no idea what car these pictures are from.
I am planning to relocate the sensor on my 123 from the dash to somewhere in the shade. In the Texas sunshine, it senses the change when conditions change from direct sun to shade from a building or cloud. The newer model had the sensor overhead so they may have been trying to upgrade to the new location. I'm planning to put mine below the wood trim on the front of the dash just left of the glove box if the piping will fit. I have a Coverlay cover with no hole to cover the original hole a lot of cracks. Warmer weather project.

Looking at it again, it appears to be from a W123. It's missing the signature sun blind over the rear view mirror that the 126s have.

That is the Air sampler motor for the sensor in the hole in shown in the first picture, there is a tube that the sensor sets in(plastic holder with tube connected). The air tube runs to the sampler and then on to the heater box near the heater control. This is the automatic climate contriol. Didn't know they put them in the 123's but they are in Gen II 86-91 models.
Is the 123 a later model?

There are 3 85 300Ds on eBay and all 3 have a temp sensor port in the dash.
Moving the temp sensor is a heck of a lot of work to be able to use the dash mat from an older 123 ![]() Sixto 87 300D |
