Why does my 240D run better when I'm 1/2 quart low on oil?

I've noticed other people reporting this in past threads, but have yet to read a reason.

Don't know why it would run better, but the dipstick indicates "min" and "max", and the Benz engines typically consume more oil when kept at the max level. Keeping the level at the midpoint seems to reduce oil consumption....

Halfway between the marks keeps the rear crankshaft seal from "leaking" too much, if that's what you're thinking about. You're not low until you're below the "low/min" mark, which I don't think I'd want to do.

In 1967 I ran a gas station in San Antonio Texas. Had a traveling salesman come in daily with a full size Pontiac, he would top off the tank and add oil. Always a quart low... I recommended he leave the oil level one quart low BUT take a spare quart with him just in case. That was the last quart I sold to him except for oil changes. The engine would blow out the quart and then maintain that level.

Might you have the wrong dipstick?

This seems to be even more evident on gasser MBs.....my 300E will "disappear" half a quart pretty quickly when topped to the max mark, but then it seems to settle in around halfway or just below half way between min/max on the stick, and stays there....so thats where I've been topping it too. My 300SD holds the level fine at just below max. Same for the other diesels.....

Same here. Oil disappears when filled to the top notch then stays rock steady about half way between.
