I read this and now...

I can't find the link I wanted to post - to save my life.

There was a chemist who wrote, so as to explain to the public, how fuel for spark vs compression ignition are "opposites." Diesel SHOULD ignite with compression where gasoline or naphtha should NOT. He then compared the rating vs analysis of the two - octane must be low in diesel fuel where cetane must be low in gasoline. If I find it again I'll post it.

BTW, has anyone else seen it?

Interesting thread. I too notice that cetane boosters quiet the engine down a good bit. From reading this about ignition being assisted by higher cetane numbers I wonder if what we're really noticing is that our timing chains are all more or less retarding the ignition, and the cetanes offset that that wear?? Or is it that cetanes help ignition at lower compression numbers?

High cetane ignites sooner, burns longer and with a lower pressure spike.

What is the effect of a lower pressure spike? Again, it seems like an engine with a lot of wear (say 265,000 miles) would rather have more time to absorb the energy....

Lower pressure spikes are better for your engine. Less noise and wear and tear, at least in theory.

I'd say higher cetane can somewhat compensate for reduced compression, but not for retarded timing due to a stretched chain.
