Hose heater

I have one on my '85 300D-T (W123, OM617); got it from Diesel Giant. Works great, draws more power (~600 Watts) than the factory block heater (~400 Watts).

I would have preferred installing the factory heater, even bought one, but discovered that the trap cat in my CA-version car made access to that part of the block almost impossible. So I sold the factory heater and bought the lower radiator hose heater.

Having replaced the trap cat with a test pipe, if I had to do it over, now I would install the factory heater.

You can leave it out just detach the Throttle linkage to the Injector pump... The fastest the thieves can go is 5 mph

you can unhook the vac line that goes to the shutoff valve so then you can lock the column and the car.
If the vacuum line to the shut-off valve is disconnected, the key can be turned off and removed from the ignition switch (without shutting the engine off), thereby locking the steering wheel.

Lower radiator hose heaters are not as good as block heaters..
So if you are able and willing to hook up to 110 volts why not install the block heater ?

If the car is in a garage, it should stay warm enough to start. If it doesn't, it's time to check your battery, glow plugs, make sure you have the right oil, etc.

You can buy a heater which can be installed in your car by cutting the lower radiator hose and clamping it there...

I'd never leave my car running unattended. I don't even like leaving it unattended when its off!

Also, in an overnight period you're going to blow through about $7-9 of diesel, thats pretty expensive! And the engine will get all carbon'd up inside, its not good to let it idle like that.
