85 300sd as stated in the original post. I guess you couldn't hear properly because he was typing too loudly.

Welcome to the site by the way TimUkena...

I don't know the part number so unfortunately I cannot help you with that but I am sure that someone who is feeling generous as opposed to just critical (there are quite a few helpful ones on the site believe it or not) will dig up a part number for you.

Another option is the "Violet Wire" mod that does almost the same thing for free or almost free.

Afterglow and the Violet Wire

I use a switch inline with the Violet Wire to enable/disable the afterglow. So far, no glowplug failure for at least 3 years.

It's really not "almost the same thing." Cutting the wire just allows the cycle to run out "naturally," which is well short of the duration of the Bosch relay afterglow duration. The OE-style timer only runs for about 45 seconds, so cutting the wire only gives (nominally) an extra 20-30 seconds following start.

That said, I personally would not buy the Bosch relay solely as an upgrade. But, if you need a new relay, it seems to be a economical choice.

My original glow plugs were still working after 20+ years, so 3 years might not be a terribly valid indicator of success.

I think 3 of my 5 GPs are origional too. I never touched them and the two that I replaced when I got the car were a bear to remove. Probably 20 years of rust.

The biggest improvement is from the first 10 or 15 seconds of afterglow on the 617 (from engine smoothness and measured emissions) so it really is close to as good as the factory afterglow relay.

Like you, I wouldn't replace a working GP relay with an afterglow model, but if my GP relay died, I would.

How about a 91 350 sdl relay, will it work for afterglow performance??

W124 Glow Plug Relay 007 545 16 32 300 350 SD SDL is the actual unit. ive seen posts that discuss using a couple different ones, the OM603 one that is the 012 545 90 32 is a preferred one but the i have a couple sources for cheap pick and pull 350 relays. So will they work, do i need to change the wires that interconnect them and the relay wire harness as well or just the relay and the plugs? Thanks.

Sorry about the caps locks, won't happen again. the preglow kit is listed on Autoparts World and thier part # is

Product: Glow Plug Kit
Part #: F1101-60420
Brand: Bosch
List Price: $165.75
Prices As Low As: $92.69

Sounds like Bosch is the way to go, I will give it a try. The original relay only stays on for about 5-10 seconds. as checked from voltmeter and had to replace one of the cheap autolite plugs already, less than a month old. The car only has 237K miles on it and has been garaged for years, although it sat for the last 7 years and was not run during that time. purged the injectors, and after it warms up it runs like a champ, no smoke, no blowby, a real dream to drive. lots of little problems that I will probably be asking for help on in the future though.

Does your relay only stay on for 5 -10 seconds or does the LIGHT only stay on for 5-10 seconds. They are controlled by two different timers. 5 to 10 seconds (or longer when it is really cold is normal for the LIGHT but the GPs stay on longer, about a minute, until you start the engine. The "Violet Wire" mod to the origional relay keeps the GPs on for the full ~minute, even after the engine starts.

I did a quick test of the violet wire today. Popped the plastic cover on the small connector, removed the violet wire and connected a voltmeter to it. and connect a test light to the glow plugs. Turned key to glow position, test light goes on, when glow light went out, started engine, test light stays on till it times out. I did this a few times and watched the meter on the purple wire. When the key is turned to the start position, I see a very brief blip of 12 v on the purple wire, which apparently is the signal to the glow plug relay to cut power to the glow plugs. With the purple wire disconnected, that signal is absent and the glow plugs stay on for the duration of the timer. I taped up the violet wire so it won't short out. When it gets warmer, I will install a normally closed push button switch like Ron in series with the violet wire. When I want after glow, just push the switch as I turn the key (don't think I need to hold it but I'll have to verify) to get after glow. I'll probably use a foot switch.

My relay only stays on for a total elapsed time of ten seconds this includes preglow and after engine starts. I am suspecting a faulty preglow relay. Tried the purple wire mod as previously suggested and no change in elapsed time. Here in Colorado I deal with temps in the mornings from 0 to mid teens in the mornings. If I plug in the block heater and cycle the relay 6 or 7 times it starts ok, but is tempermental untill she warms up.
